COEFFICIENTS FOR THERMAL EXPANSION
The average coefficients of thermal expansion from room temperature (68°F) to f°F are shown
for high-purity aluminum in Figure 1. The coefficients of thermal expansion at /°F are shown
in Figure 2. Values from these curves multiplied by the alloy constant, C, give the corresponding
coefficients for the alloy. It will be noted that the coefficient values, in Figures 1 and 2 have
been multiplied by 106; therefore, the actual coefficient values are as picked from the curves
times 10w6. (For example: coefficient of thermal expansion for alloy 1100 from 68°F to — 58°F
is 12.1 X 10-«, which is 0.0000121.)

©fempirlcal equations derived from expansion determinations on annealed high-purity aluminum within the
temperature range —320* to !,000°F, C= 1.000.
©Constants established from determinations made on Alcoa Alloys in annealed tempers, i.e., in states approaching
dimensional stability through wide temperature ranges. With heat-treatable alloys, the application of equation 2
and of coefficients from Figures 1 and 2 is restricted to temperatures below 600°F. With wrought alloys 7075,
7076, 7079 and 7178, application is restricted to temperatures below 400°F. The values or the constant when
applied to alloys in their heat-treated tempers are approximately 0.015 greater than given above. With these
tempers, application is further restricted to temperatures which do not appreciably exceed those used in the
final aging treatments.
