I built lanterns from the marrow of my nights,
Filled them with breath, with trembling light.
Yet when I tried to set them free,
The sky turned still, and kept them with me.
I wrote letters to a future unseen,
Sealed them with wax, painted in green.
But the winds misled the waiting shore,
And the pages slept, unread, once more.
I carved a stair from broken glass,
Each shard, a wish that could not pass.
At the summit, there was no throne,
Only the echo of what I’d known.
I trained my shadow to sprout wings,
To chase the suns that morning brings;
But shadows fall, and wings decay,
And yet they stretched a longer way.
The orchard of tomorrow bore no fruit,
Its trees stood still, their silence absolute.
Yet in their roots, a hum remained,
A secret song the earth contained.
The sea of dreams pulled back its tide,
Its pearls withdrew, its caves would hide.
But on the shore, the foam would glow,
A fleeting gift before it’d go.
Dreams unfulfilled are not just loss,
They carve our souls, though at a cost.
A hollow vessel, yet refined,
An emptiness that still reminds.
And so I hold them, not as pain,
But lanterns lit without the flame.
Though they have never touched the sky,
Their quiet glow still lights my eye.
