a product of that era?
Impressionism
Impressionism started in the 1800s when life was changing because of new machines and
busy cities. Artists like Monet didn’t want to paint perfect or serious things anymore. They
painted fast, using soft colors and quick brush strokes. Their goal was to show how a
moment looked and felt. They often painted nature, people outside, or everyday scenes.
The style was light and fresh, not dark or heavy. It showed that art could change as the
world changed.
2. Ancient Art and Cultural Identity. Ancient civilizations infused their artwork with
symbols, traditions, and beliefs unique to their culture. Compare two ancient
civilizations (e.g., Greek vs. Egyptian, Roman vs. Chinese) and discuss how their
artistic traditions shaped the way they viewed power, religion, and daily life.
Greek vs. Egyptian Art
Greek art focused on strong and beautiful people, because they believed in human power
and skill. Egyptian art focused on kings and gods, showing them in stiff poses and using
symbols. Greeks made statues that looked real, with movement and emotion. Egyptians
made flat, serious images for tombs and temples. Greek art showed daily life, sports, and
stories from their myths. Egyptian art was more about religion and the afterlife. Both
showed what each culture thought was most important.
3. Timeless Influence. Many artistic techniques and styles from ancient times still
influence modern art and architecture. Choose a specific ancient artistic method
(e.g., Roman mosaics, Greek sculptures, Chinese calligraphy) and examine how it
continues to shape contemporary design, visual arts, or even digital media today.
Greek Sculpture Influence Today
Greek sculptures showed strong bodies and perfect shapes. They believed in balance,
beauty, and human strength. Today, we still see this in action movies, comic books, and
video games. Heroes often have the same body shapes and pose as Greek statues. Even
buildings today copy Greek columns and design. Their style became a symbol of power and
beauty. That’s why Greek art still matters in modern times.
4. The Artist’s PurposeArt has served different purposes—whether aesthetic, political,
religious, or personal expression. Think about an artist or movement that challenged
societal norms. What do you think drove these artists to create, and how did their work
redefine perceptions of art in their time?
Dada Movement
The Dada movement started during World War I when the world was full of pain and
confusion. Artists didn’t understand why people kept fighting, so they made strange and
funny art. One artist put a toilet in a gallery and called it art. They used random things like
photos, paper, and trash to create meaning. Dada artists broke the rules on purpose. They
wanted to show that art can be anything. Their work changed how people saw and
understood art forever.
