Slippery Slope
The quick patter of Bob’s steps around the corner makes my heart feel a little warmer. Despite the
sweltering heat choking me like a straightjacket, I feel cold on the inside. I received devastating news
today and meeting with my best friend always makes me feel better.
“Bill! It’s good to see you, how have you been,” Bob exclaims with a wide grin. He pulls me in for a
comforting hug. Bob seems to be elated today, his smile’s a little bigger, his eyes a little brighter and
his clothes a little cleaner.
“Hey Bob! It’s been a rough day,” I reply with dismay.
“Let’s get ice cream, that’ll make you feel better.”
The scent of vanilla, mint and chocolate dance around my nose and draw me closer to the ice cream
truck. Bob buys me a pearly white vanilla cone. My nice ice cream scoop sits tall on its checkered
cone as we walk down the pavement.
“I’ve got a surprise for you, Bill,” Bob cheekily giggles. Perfect! Maybe this would make my day
better. “I got the promotion!”
My feet stop abruptly. My ice cream rolls slightly towards the edge of the cone. The promotion? MY
promotion?
To pour more salt to my wound, Bob adds “I just got the email today, our boss is so excited that I’m
joining the upper management team.”
He keeps speaking but I hear nothing. Bob stole my promotion, my future. He’s the reason today has
been the worst day of my life! My own best friend betrayed me. My brain shuts down. My heartbeat
skyrockets. Anger pumps through my veins. Rage bubbles up my throat. I try to contain it but–
“YOU STOLE MY PROMOTION!” I scream, my fists squeezing white and my nails digging into my
hands. My ice cream teeters towards the edge of the cone, threatening to fall off the edge. Through
heaving breaths I yell “I HATE YOU BOB! HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME!”
“Bill, I’m sorry! I just did my best and worked hard towards getting the promotion!” Bob’s hands were
up defensively.
“That was MY promotion!” I scream so loudly my voice cracks. My right hand lets go of the ice cream.
Splat!
My fists curl up into boulders and I throw them towards Bob’s face with full force. He swiftly dodges.
“Wow!” He exclaims. “You’re acting insane Bill. I’m leaving. Goodbye.”
There’s a strong certainty when he says goodbye. His heels turn and walk around the corner,
disappearing. I feel cold again. My eyes well up with tears. My ice cream melts on the fizzling
pavement. I sink into regret like my ice cream sinks into the ground.
