1. Read the reading passage to identify at least 3 Tier II words. Check that meet the
following criteria and complete chart below:
 High frequency- words that are common in grade-level texts
 Are used across content areas
 Are in a word family with many derivational relatives
 Can be explained with synonyms

2. Write a 1-sentence goal focused on vocabulary depth/breadth for Marie that includes the
following elements:
a. When the goal will be met (e.g., by the end of the fall semester, by the end of the IEP
year, etc.)
b. Explicit statement of what he/she will do
c. The modality (e.g., written, spoken)
d. The criteria for success (e.g., with at least 90% accuracy, at least twice per week x 15
weeks, at least 50 by the end of the semester)
e. Level of support (e.g., independently, following a clinician model, given a similar
example, etc.)
f. What will be measured (e.g., entries in a vocabulary journal, verbal descriptions, etc.)
3. Describe an activity that could be used to promote active processing of the meanings of
