RESEARCH & INVESTIGATION
ASSIGNMENTS PART 3
"MEDIA"
This item of CAE causes us to immerse into the world of media. During the first lesson we’ll make an
inventory on what you already know about this subject. What’s your understanding of the concept?
TASK A:
You've found out how much you already know about media. Now you're going to do a task to
learn even more about media. (Unfortunately this is a Dutch site, after that we’ll proceed in
English)
Visit this site: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWObRKx38fo
Make sure you’ve got ear buds / headphones
Listen carefully because you can use the given information later on.
1. Make two diagrams / drawings in which you explain how media communicate.
One diagram explaining the chain of events needed to fill the gap in either space or
time between sender and receiver using an old medium, the second diagram showing
how a modern medium functions.
You can choose whether you do this by hand or digitally.
2. Create a general timeline, that shows all media in the right place, either by hand or
digitally. Start with the cave drawings.
TASK B:
Answer the following questions:
1. What, in your opinion, is the best medium ever invented. Write a motivation as to
why? (+/- 150 words).
2. Which medium should never have been invented and why? (+ / - 150 words).
3. What would a medium of the future be like? (+ / - 100 words).
TASK C:
Research shows that media take in a natural
and important role in the lives of youth, media
no longer function as standalone devices
within their environment. Some youngsters
perceive the media themselves as being their
surrounding, sometimes even reality.
The advent of the Internet and the emergence
of commercial media brands tend to blur the
line between media and commerce. Media
influences youngsters at an increasingly
younger age, while the influence of parents
declines ever before.
The media use of children and adolescents
increasingly takes place unsupervised, making
it difficult for parents to accompany young
people growing up into responsible, active
participants in today's mediated world.
The study shows that problems can arise when
young people, due to lack of guidance, are not
well able to assess the media information on
reliability or "colored nature."
1. Find a positive and negative review on one and the same film /concert/game. Indicate
where you found them. (Source)
2. View and read reviews carefully. Indicate what review, negative or positive, influences you
the most. Motivate why; what reasons explain why you are affected in such a manner?
(+/- 150 words.)
3. The influence of the media goes too far. Have you ever consciously been influenced by
media, other than this moment? Explain how this came about and why you were so aware
of it. (+/- 150 words.)
TASK D:
Logorama, also known, as La Vie des Marques is one of the ten animated films nominated to win a
golden statuette in the category “ Best Short Animation”.
This Kodak Short Film Award-winning animation by François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic
Hervé Houplain played in 2009 at the Cannes Film Festival and has travelled from one festival to
another long after.
What makes Logorama so special is that almost everything in the imaginary world is made from
world famous brands, logos and other proprietary images.
It's a movie in which all the visual elements from the buildings to the lampposts and the characters
are composed of trademarks.
In the beginning, as soon as an online version appeared, it disappeared almost as quickly. Reason
behind this was the fact that the makers made use of familiar logos, obviously without permission.
Find the film on Vimeo.nl or Youtube.com
After having watched the film answer the following questions:
1.
What message do the makers of the film try to convey?
2.
Give 15 logos that you have recognized in the film.
3.
Famous mascots and characters maintain their typical appearance, but sometimes
behave somewhat differently from what you would expect. Summarize 3 characters
acting in the film and exemplify why their behaviour could be described as being
different than expected.
4.
What can you say about the music that is heard in the movie?
5.
What would happen if another piece of music were to be put underneath this film?
Choose one scene (specify time-lapse) and indicate what music fragment you would like
to suggest. Explain what difference this would make and why?
6.
How do you like this film? Explain your opinion. (+- 150 words)
TASK E:
Advertising is one of the oldest professions in the world, even Eve needed her apple to tempt Adam.
But what is Advertising really? The Dutch word
Reclame is derived from the Latin Reclamare, literally:
echoing or praising something out loud.
The Great Dictionary defines advertisement as “public
recommendation and all that is intended to promote
the sale of goods or services, which originates from a
group of stakeholders trying to recruit supporters and
admirers, in order to persuade them to buy sth, to
interest them in a new job etc.”
In our society advertising plays a vital role in selling
products or services.
With the development of the press advertising has
grown tall and nowadays especially the broadcasters
are totally intertwined with it.
Advertisment is a remarkable phenomenon. Since the
creation of adverts it has always been under fire of
intense criticism, doubts and contradictory comments.
Some feel advertising to be creative, challenging and
stimulating, for others it is noisy and intrusive. Some
consider advertisement even decadent and regard it as
a product of a culture of greed or a gross proliferation
of individualism.
The way in which adverts send their messages across
can be highly volatile. On "industrial" level they present
informative messages. On the consumer market
hawever ads are often very emotional and evocative,
designed to add a psychological or symbolic value.
Anti-advertisements -> Guerrilla!!
“Rather street art than commercial bleating”.
This slogan started the action "The world is not for sale" as a response to advertising. Antiadvertisment has become a widespread phenomenon. It's very nice to create your own
SPOOFAD or ADBUST.
Adverts always link products to a particular lifestyle:
Nikes = sporty and sassy, Coca Cola = warm and social.
Adbusters is an international movement of artists who try to break the power of multinationals
and companies using their own fighting resources: advertising. With visual and textual
interventions in existing commercials they provide commentary on the campaigns behind
those commercials and they express criticism of the consumer.
Create your own anti-advert. ADBUST!
1. Look for an ad that you want to ADBUST. Search in magazines,
photograph billboards, posters, wegreclame, tear ads from magazines,
newspapers and the Internet. In short, create an image archive.
2. Choose the ad that inspires you most.
3. Make several copies of the advertisement. This may be digitally or by hand.
4. Check the message of this advertisement very well and change the text and graphics etc.
so that there arises an anti-advert, thus changing its original meaning.
5. Make sure you hand in all research and your final draft neatly organized and accumulated.
ATTENTION! Ensure your design looks like its original, as much as possible .
This way you create the most confusion and the greatest impact.
Edit the copy with other photos and images or change the text but always remain as close as
possible to the original font.
