What are
drugs?
A drug is any chemical substance
that affects the functioning of the
body
The amount taken of a drug and what it is
taken for is very important or it may cause
harm. When drugs are used improperly, we
talk about drug abuse. Substance addiction
leads to a person wanting a drug more and
more and not caring about the harm it does to
your body.
Besides harming the body, drug
addiction has social, physiological
and economic effects.

When a person is abusing Drugs, it is easy to tell by their
behavioral patterns.It can cause short term and long term effects
to them as an individaul and the people around them

Unemployment
Severed relationships
Economic effects of
drug abuse
Addiction is expensive not just to one’s life but to their actual pockets.
Medical care treatment due to the consequences of abuse, which puts
heavy strains on healthcare systems and their families who have to cover
these medical costs.
Loss of educational opportunities for both abusers and their children, weakening future human capital. As due to
their history many of these abusers will be left unemployed and their children's reputation tarnished.
Drug abuse leads to employee absenteeism, lost productivity, work accidents caused by the side effects of
drug use, long term drug abuse can even result in unemployment.
Criminal justice such as enforcement of laws against drug abuse and costs of incarceration due to
irrational behavior caused by drug abuse.
Creates an economic burden for governments and tax payers alike, who spend considerable sums of money on
treatments for addiction, welfare dependence, unemployment, or involvement in the criminal justice or social
service systems
Substance abuse is responsible for bringing financial instability and challenges to families for the ordinary person
as addiction drains out the resources from the family.
Creates an endless cycle of addicts buying drugs from dealers and the dealers in turn making a lot of money from
their addiction
Physiological
Effects of Drug Abuse
Drug abuse can seriously damage the human body. It affects the brain and
nervous system, leading to mood swings, memory loss, and long-term brain
damage. The heart and lungs are also put at risk, as drugs can cause high blood
pressure, irregular heartbeat, stroke, and breathing problems. The liver, which
filters toxins, often becomes damaged, leading to diseases like cirrhosis. Drug
abuse also weakens the immune system, making the body more vulnerable to
infections. In addition, it disrupts the reproductive system, causing infertility
and pregnancy complications. Over time, the body becomes dependent on the
drug, leading to addiction and painful withdrawal symptoms when use is
stopped.
