Unit 6. Earth Physics
6.1 Sound Wave
Pitch = frequency of sound waves
Sound Wave = Sound travels from vibrating object to our ears
To hear a sound , there must be:
- a vibration to make the sound
- a medium containing particles where sound waves can travel
Medium - The substance that the sound wave moves through
Sound waves can travel through the medium like solid, liquid, gas.
How soundwave appear
When the objects vibrate, the particles in front of the object vibrate , the particles
make vibrate other particles in front of them . This makes a sound wave.
6.2 Reflection of sound wave
Echo - Reflection of sound wave ( Useful echoes, Unwanted echoes) Flat and plane surfaces can give a lot of
echoes
6.3 Structure of the Earth
Earth Crust (solid
rock)
Molten Rock (Magma)
Outer Core (Molten
Metals, Iron & Nickel
Inner Core (Solid
Metal, Iron & Nickel)
6.3 Structure of the Earth
Continental Drift - the land broke up and drifted apart called continental drift
Earth Crust - made up of large tectonic plates
( Oceanic Plates and Continental Plates)
6.4 Changes in the earth
Plate boundaries - The place where tectonic plates meet
Movement of plates- (moving apart , moving together, sliding past), fold
mountains
Moving together – one plate move underneath the other one(subduction)
Moving apart – drift away from each other
Sliding past – can cause violence movement
Fold mountains – plates moving together and the rocks crumple and folded upwards
6.4 Change in the Earth
Sliding past
Moving together
Fold mountains
Moving apart
Volcanos
Lava = on the surface
magma = when it is underground
Active , Inactive (dormant), Extinct
Earthquake
size or magnitude
6.5 Solar and Lunar Eclipse
Shadows – shadow will form , when an opaque is in front of a source of light
Opaque - that will not allow light to pass through
Rays - light travels in straight lines called light rays
6.5 Solar and Lunar Eclipse
Solar eclipse ( the Moon between Sun and Earth )
Total solar eclipse, Partial solar eclipse
Ring of fire
Supermoon
Lunar eclipse ( the earth between the sun and the moon )
