It causes induced (parasitic) currents in such structures and leads to the following: • Resistance losses (I2R) and • Magnetic losses. Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Magnetic losses will constitute the following: • Eddy current losses • Hysteresis losses In a non-magnetic enclosure, such as aluminum or stainless steel, there will be only resistance losses. In a magnetic enclosure, such as mild steel (MS), there will also be hysteresis and eddy current losses in addition to resistance losses. All these losses appear as heat in the enclosure and the metallic structures in the vicinity. At higher currents say, 2000 A and above, this phenomenon, particularly with MS enclosures, may assume such large proportions that the enclosure, instead of providing a heat-dissipating surface to the heat generated by the current-carrying conductors inside, may add to their heat اللى عندىoperating conditions وذلك اعتمادا على الcapacity - Continuous maximum rating (CMR) and permissible temperature rise: This is the maximum r.m.s. current that the bus system can carry continuously without exceeding temperature rise limits - Rated r.m.s. continuous current carrying capacity shall be at least equal to the maximum current capability of the associated equipment (Which may be higher than nominal rated current) rounded off to the nearest higher standard current rating of the busduct. For higher altitudes to achieve the same level of dielectric strength, the values of clearances and creepage distances, may be increased by at least 1% for every 100 m rise in altitude. - Clearance : It is the shortest distance in air between two conductive parts. - Creepage : It is the shortest distance along the surface of an insulating material between two conductive parts. Atmospheric conditions a bus system may be required to be partly located outdoors. In such conditions, it is important that adequate care is taken to construct the bus enclosure to weather the outdoor conditions as follows: Page 8 of Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - by providing a canopy on the top and special paint treatment on the outdoor part. - It is also recommended to seal off the indoor from the outdoor part to prevent the effect of rainwater, dust and temperature and other weather conditions on the indoor part. This can be achieved by providing seal-off bushings, one on each phase and neutral, wherever the bus enclosure passes through a wall. The index of protection IP: is the level of protection provided by an enclosure against access to hazardous parts, the penetration of solid foreign bodies and of water. The IP code is a coding system to indicate the protection index, Knowing the protection index is essential for the specification, installation, operation and quality control of equipment. For this 4 tap-offs per busbar run are to be provided respectively (Fig. 2/6). The following is given: • Total load power = 580 kW • cos φ = 0.9 • Ue = 400 V • Plan view and machine installation • Rated diversity factor α = 0.8 • Transformer: 1 × 500 kVA Infeed from the distribution board: cable 2 × 185 mm2 • Installed power of the 4 production lines: 200, 182, 118, and 100 kW; no crane operation • Position of the trunking units: edgewise. Solution: Page 12 of 54 على حسن العشماوى/م www.Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The operational current for the 4 production lines in the hall results from formula (1): IB (II) = 110 kW x 0.8 x 1 / (√3 · 400 V · 0.9) = 141.1 A IB (III) = 190 kW x 0.8 x 1 / (√3 · 400 V · 0.9) = 243.8 A IB (IV) = 180 kW x 0.8 x 1 / (√3 · 400 V · 0.9) = 230.9 A IB (V) = 100 kW x 0.8 x 1 / (√3 · 400 V · 0.9) = 128.3 A IB total = 141.1+243.8+230.9+128.3 = 744 A The cumulated single currents are multiplied by the rated diversity factor 0.8 for the 4 tap-offs, which provides the operational current for an infeed at the beginning of the busbar trunking system: IB = 744 A x 0.8 = 595 A Case#2: Calculation of load current (IB) for vertical floor distribution in an office building In the case of office buildings, the diversity factor will be taken based on the floor usage or types of loads. If no exact specifications are known for the diversity factor, solid experience values can often be obtained from local distribution network operators. They, however, differ regionally. Typical average values are specified in Tab. 2/9. Type of loads Diversity factor range Apartments with electric stoves and water heaters Night storage heating Lighting in offie buildings and in buildings for commercial use Elevators and general installations Meeting rooms 0.1 to 0.2 Typical average Value 0.15 0.8 to 1 0.7 to 0.9 0.9 0.8 0.6 to 0.8 0.7 0.6 to 0.8 0.7 Page 13 of Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Small offies Large offies 0.5 to 0.7 0.4 to 0.8 0.6 0.6 Example#2: vertical floor distribution in an office building In a 15-floor office building, all floors are to be supplied individually via a vertically installed busbar trunking system. The total surface of the individual floors is: 30 m x 80 m = 2,400 m2, Given cos φ = 0.9 Solution: the power demand for the effective area (0.8 · total surface) of a floor is calculated = 0.8 x 2,400 m2 x 50 W/m2 = 96 kW For the remaining technical spaces on the floor, the below power demand is assumed = 0.2 x 2,400 m2 x 10 W/m2 = 4.8 kW Total demand power per floor = 96 + 4.8 = 100.8 KW Total demand power for the 15-floor office building = 15 x 100.8 = 1512 KW This results in the following operational current for the busbar trunking system with an infeed (κ = 1) into the building: from above table, a diversity factor of 0.6 for small and large offices will be used IB = 1512 KW x 0.6 x 1 / (√3 x 400 V x 0.9) = 1,455 A Page 14 of بنحسب قيمة االحمال المستقبلية بأخذ ( ) 2عامل مهمين اثناء التصميم وهما: -1ال Projected Future Load Factor PFLF والعامل ده بيؤخذ فى االعتبار اذا كان لدينا احمال مستقبلية ( معروف مسبقا) اننا سنقوم بإضافتها بعد مدة معينة بتتراوح من 10الى 15سنة والنسبة المتعارف عليها لهذا العامل بتختلف حسب حجم و استخدام المشروع كما يلى: small property in a suburban environment: 0% to 10% large property in a rural environment: 10 to 25% Office building: 5 to 15% Laboratory building: 15 to 35% Hospital: 40 to 80% Data center: 50 to 200% Bank: 30 to 50% Medical Center: 30 to 40% Church: 10 to 30% School: 50 to 80% Warehouse: 10 to 30% ملحوظة :هذه القيم تقديرية وتخضع لتقدير المصمم وبناء على رغبة المالك بعد توضيح التكلفة الفعلية إلضافة االحمال المستقبليه. Its size has an important bearing on the temperature rise of conductors and consequently their current-carrying capacity. The enclosure effect and the ventilating conditions of the surroundings in which the enclosure is to be installed should thus be considered when designing a bus system. The ratio of the area of the current-carrying conductors to the area of the enclosure will provide the basis to determine the heat dissipation effect. In the case of longer run lengths, it may be required to calculate the voltage drop for three-phase from the formula: ΔU = k ·√ 3 · IB · l · (RL · cos φ + XL · sin φ) For single-phase BTS the formula is: ΔU = k ·2 · IB · l · (RL · cos φ + XL · sin φ) Where ΔU = voltage drop in V IB = rated current in A l = total length of the system in m k = load distribution factor RL = ohmic resistance of the conductor in mΩ/m in case of busbar temperature rise XL = inductive resistance of conductors in mΩ/m in case of busbar temperature rise cos φ = power factor sin φ = reactive power factor Percentage voltage drop is obtained from: where Ur is rated voltage. The tables provided here are only for general reference. For exact details one may contact the manufacturer. For the load distribution factor k, a simple formula can be created in the case of a uniform load (identical currents) of multiple tap-offs (see Fig. 2/3). To do this, the factor is averaged from the sum of ratios of individual intervals li (total number n) to the distance between the infeed and the tap-off at the end of the busbar trunking system (it usually corresponds approximately to the total length l): Page 40 of Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Limit values: k = 0.5 as a minimum value for countless tap-offs k = 0.75 for n = 2 We have two cases: Case#1: for evenly distributed loads Case#2: for unevenly distributed loads Case#1: for evenly distributed loads For center infeed into a busbar trunking system, each section after the infeed can be considered separately. The voltage drop, for example, is reduced to a quarter in the case of exact center infeed with the same intervals between identical loads (Fig. 2/3c). Due to the linear dependency of the voltage drop on the rated current and on the length of the busbar sections, the relations for power distribution between the sections and the interval distributions on the individual sections can be used. This is shown in examples d) and e) in Fig. 2/3 Page 41 of Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Case#2: for unevenly distributed loads If the loads cannot be considered to be evenly distributed, the voltage drop can be calculated more accurately by using the formulas below. For the distribution of the three-phase loads shown in the figure, the voltage drop can be calculated by the following formula if the BTS has a constant cross section (as usual): Generally speaking, this formula becomes: where: • rt is the phase resistance per unit of length of BTS, measured under thermal steady-state conditions [mΩ/m]; • x is the phase reactance per unit of length of BTS [mΩ/m]; • cosϕm is average power factor of the i-th load; • Ii is i-th load current [A]; • Li is the distance of the i-th load from the beginning of the BTS [m] Example#8: if IB = 1950 A, calculate the voltage drop for three phase busbar rated 2000 A and its length is 80 meters fed from one end when the load at end of line and when the load is distributed evenly, p.f= 0.8 Page 43 of Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- solution: ΔU = k ·√ 3 · IB · l · (RL · cos φ + XL · sin φ) First: When busbar fed from one end and the load at end of line k = 1 For 2000A busbar from above table: RL = 25.15 X 10-6 ohm/meter XL = 9.8 X 10-6 ohm/meter ΔU = 1 x √ 3 x 1950 x 80 x (25.15 X 10-6 x 0.8 + 9.8 X 10-6 x 0.6) = 7.02 V ΔU% = 7.02 X 100 / 380 = 1.84% Which is accepted because it is from 1 to 2% second: When busbar fed from one end and the load is distributed evenly k = 0.5 For 2000A busbar from above table: RL = 25.15 X 10-6 ohm/meter XL = 9.8 X 10-6 ohm/meter ΔU = 0.5 x √ 3 x 1950 x 80 x (25.15 X 10-6 x 0.8 + 9.8 X 10-6 x 0.6) = 3.51 V ΔU% = 3.51 X 100 / 380 = 0.92% Which is accepted because it is from 1 to 2% Page 44 of 54 على حسن العشماوى/م www. What are The important parameters in BBT short-circuit sizing? BBT short-circuit sizing is determined by the following parameter: ■ the maximum peak current, peak l: this parameter expresses the instantaneous electrodynamic withstand limits of the busbar trunking. Peak current value is often the most restrictive instantaneous characteristic for the protection device. ■ maximum short-term rms current lcw: this parameter expresses the permissible temperature rise limit of conductors for a given period of time (0.1 to 1 s). ■ the thermal stress in A2s: this parameter expresses the instantaneous thermal stress withstand of the BBT. Notes: 1- Normally, if the short-circuit generates fault conditions that are compatible with the first two characteristics, this constraint is “naturally satisfied”. 2- The assumed short-circuit current to be considered for BBT protection is the one found at supply box level. Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How we know that the calculated BBT rating is satisfied for short circuit sizing? Two cases must be considered: case#1: directely protected busbar trunking circuit breaker lcu ≥ assumed Isc at point A BBT peak l ≥ asymmetrical assumed or limited Isc at point A BBT thermal withstand in lcw ≥ thermal stress passing through the BBT case#2: busbar trunking protected downstream from a cable circuit breaker lcu ≥ assumed Isc at point A BBT peak l ≥ asymmetrical assumed or limited Isc at point B BBT thermal withstand in lcw ≥ thermal stress passing through the BBT. If one of these relationships is not verified, a suitable higher rating must be chosen for the BBT. Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: The value of the asymmetrical short-circuit current is obtained from the value of the symmetrical short-circuit current, Isc, multiplied by a standardized asymmetry factor (k). For example: for a circuit with a assumed short-circuit current of 50 kA rms, the first peak reaches 105 kA (50 kA x 2.1). We can summarize the BBT protection and short circuit sizing rules based on the circuit breaker type used for protection in the following table: Page 47 of Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Methods for calculating Rated currents (Ir) and short-circuit currents (Isc) of standard transformers Method#1: For infeed via transformers, rated currents and symmetrical short-circuit currents can be calculated approximately using the rated apparent power SrT of the transformer: Ir = k · SrT (in A) Where: SrT: the rated apparent power of the transformer in KVA K: constant k = 1.45 for rated voltage UrT = 400 V k = 0.84 for UrT = 690 V Based on this, the prospective initial short-circuit current of a transformer can be calculated approximately using: Isc = Ir / Zsc With the rated value of the impedance voltage Zsc (4% or 6%) Method#2: By knowing the MVA Short circuit (Ssc) of the network which is generally provided by the customer (Utility company) or we can calculate it having the short-circuit current lsc and the operating voltage U as follows: Ssc = √3x Isc x U Note: A specification may give one value in kA rms and one value in MVA as below: Isc = 19 kA rms or 350 MVA at 10 kV if we calculate the equivalent current at 350 MVA we find: Isc = 350 / (√3 x 10) = 20.2 KA rms The difference between 19 and 20.2 KA lies in the way in which we round up the value and in local habits. The value 19 kA rms is probably the most realistic. Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- another explanation for this difference is possible: in medium and high voltage, IEC 909 applies a coefficient of 1.1 when calculating maximal Isc This coefficient of 1.1 takes account of a voltage drop of 10 % across the faulty installation (cables, etc) Method#3: from tables For the values in Tab. 2/2 from a more exact calculation of the prospective initial symmetrical short-circuit current of the transformer when connecting to a network with unlimited short-circuit power, the voltage factor and the impedance correction factor for transformers were considered according to IEC 60909-0 (VDE 0102). = 0.8, check if calculated BBT rating is satisfied for short circuit sizing Solution: Check from the technical catalogue of busway manufacturer the short-circuit withstand of 2500A, we find Icw (t = 1second) = 80kA & Ipk = 198 kA since, Maximum short-circuit at the secondary of Transformer is 36kA ˂ 80 KA. Therefore, 2500A busway short-circuit rating, 80kA is far higher. Selection is justified. Checking the suitability of calculated CSA of BBT for the thermal effects of short circuit We have (2) methods as follows: Method#1: comparing the total temperature after short circuit with the maximum admissible temperature by the parts in contact with the busbars To determine the minimum size of conductor for a required fault level, Isc, to account for the thermal effects one can use the following formula to determine the minimum size of conductor for any fault level: Where: θt = temperature rise (in ⁰C) Isc = symmetrical fault current r.m.s. (in Amps) A = cross-sectional area of the conductor (in mm2) 20 = temperature coefficient of resistance at 20⁰C /⁰C, which as in Table 30.1 is 0.00403 for pure aluminium and 0.00363 for aluminium alloys and 0.00393 for pure copper θ = operating temperature of the conductor at which the fault occurs (in ⁰C) Page 50 of Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k = 1.166 for aluminium and 0.52 for copper t = duration of fault (in seconds) θtotal = θn + ( θ– θn) + θt or θtotal = θ + θt θn = Ambient temperature the calculated CSA will be suitable, if θtotal ≤ maximum admissible temperature by the parts in contact with the busbars. Example#10: if Isc =31.5 KA, A=2000 mm2, copper busbar, operating temperature = 90 ⁰C and duration of fault = 3 sec calculate the temperature rise due to short circuit and check the chosen busbar CSA is suitable or not if the parts in contact with the busbars can withstand a maximum temperature of 100 ⁰C. solution: θt = (0.52/100) (31500 x 31500 / 2000 x2000) (1+0.00393 x 90) x 3 = 5.24 ⁰C θtotal = θ + θt = 90 + 5.24 = 95.24 ⁰C check if, θtotal ≤ maximum admissible temperature by the parts in contact with the busbars. 95.24 ≤ 100 then, the chosen busbar CSA is suitable. Method#2: using curves to find the minimum busbar size to account for the thermal effects The above formula from method#1 is also drawn in the form of curves as shown in Figure 28.5, Page 51 of Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Isc in kA) versus final temperature. From these curves the minimum conductor size can be easily found for any fault level, for both aluminium and copper conductors and for any desired end temperature. As in the above case Page 52 of Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Example#11: Determine the minimum conductor size for a fault level of 50 kA for one second for an aluminium conductor. Assuming the temperature rise to be 100 ⁰C and the initial temperature of the conductor at the instant of the fault 85 ⁰C. Solution: The standard size of aluminium flat nearest to this is 50.8 mm x 12.7 mm or (2'' x 1 /2'') or any other equivalent flat size A small difference, if any, between this and that calculated above may be due to approximation and interpolation only. This minimum conductor size will take account of the heating effects during the fault, irrespective of the current rating of the conductor. This much conductor Page 53 of Electrical-Knowhow.com الحسابات التصميمة للباسبارات --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- size is essential for this fault level even for very low current ratings. However, the required conductor size may be more than this also, depending upon the continuous current it has to carry, as discussed later. Page 54 of 54
