INTRODUCTION TO REVIT SOFTWARE 1.1. Installation Before starting the exercises install the software and register it either demo or subscription. Demo mode serve as a non-cost viewer, allowing you to export, print, or plot the project which is not edited. 2. EXPLORING THE USER INTERFACE When the Revit Architecture window is displayed, different sections will appear on the display screen. 2.1. Menu Bar and Toolbars At the top of the display there is the standard Microsoft windows-based menu bar, from which we can access to all Revit Architecture commands. Icons on the toolbars are buttons for executing Revit commands 2.2. Option Bars Option bars are below the toolbars, which displays command option for the current operation, if you click on any design bar on the left side of the revit window the option bars display. 2.3. Type selector Type selector is located on the left side of the option bar, a drop-down menu that shoes different types of elements to add to a project. you can choose any element type by clicking in type selector menu bar. 2.4. Properties button To the right of the type selector is the properties button which lead you to a dialog page in which you can change various properties of a selected component 2.5. View Control Bar At the lower left corner of the drawing area is the view control bar. the controls are the graphical shortcuts to various View commands, namely shadow, visual style, sun path, scale, advanced model graphic, crop regions, temporary hide, and temporary view properties. 2.6. Drawing Area Drawing area of the Revit Architecture window displays views (sheets and schedules) of the current project we can use commands on the window menu to arrange the project views. Each time you open a view in project the view displays in the drawing area. 2.7. Project browser Project browser is a moveable page and you can place it anywhere on the display. If the project browser is not shown on the display by clicking on the view tab and going to the user interface and by clicking the tick mark it will appear on the display and same procedure for status bar etc. The project browser is consisting of all views, families, Elevations, floor plans, ceiling plan, sheets, schedules and groups. 2.8. Status bar At the lower left corner of the drawing area is the status bar which displays the status of the current command 2.9. Getting started While you have explored interface, you can start your first project. In this project we use some of the basic commands found in Revit architecture. 3. Creating a project By creating a project or modeling a building we can use many 3d modeling software such as Revit Architecture, 3ds max and many others. While opening Revit software before starting the modeling you have to choose the type of template that you want to work with. On the display you have the commands bar and toolbars to use and create your own project. 3.1. Building the model part 1 3.1.1. Datum elements 1(Level): - Under the Architecture tab on the datum you can find the levels and levels are created as reference to model the building or the project. By clicking on the level, you can change the name of the level or height of the level as you wanted. Once you are finished with level settings you can start modeling your project. 3.1.2. Datum elements 2-Grids Under the datum tab next to the levels at the right side of the display you can find the grid command. They have the same properties as of levels and they make the work very easy to the user Before starting the exercise with the project, they set up the levels and grids. By clicking on the grid lines, you can change the grid properties 3.2. Creating walls The walls are under the Architectural tap by clicking on wall command various types off wall are listed by modify panel. Under Architectural wall we have different types of walls and we can change the type of wall by clicking on edit type and we can add a layer or remove a layer from the wall. In a modeling project we generally use the architectural type. we use interior walls to create rooms and exterior walls are used for creating the boundary wall. 3.2.2. Curtain walls A curtain wall is an outer covering of a building in which the outer walls are non -structural utilized only to keep the weather out and allow more lights in. Curtain walls are consisting of three parts glass, mullions and curtain grids. We can access to all properties of curtain grid by clicking on curtain grid command. We can replace the glass of a curtain wall by a window or a door and then by modifying the door or window dimensions we place the door as our need. they are made up of lightweight materials thus reducing construction cost. 3.3. Adding doors We load these components from the training file folder or from the library of the Revit to the project and then we can add the3.m to the exterior and interior walls of the model. On the basic tab of the design bar, click door option. There are limited number of door types available by default template. You can load additional door types from the library of the software. While loading different door types will be available to use and then you can change the size as your requirement 3.4. Adding windows Windows are hosted components that we can add to any type of wall. When you are finished with floor plan walls you can start adding windows to your rooms as per your requirement. Few numbers of windows are available in the selection type by default. But if you want to explore a greater number of window then click on the load family and load them to your project. We can place the windows to the project in different views such as Elevation view, 3d view and section view 3.5. Creating floor in Revit Architecture The floor command is under the Architecture tab and by clicking on the command it will show you a list of methods that you can create a floor. Draw the floor boundaries using one of the following tools, line, arch, pick walls or the remaining tool. After drawing the boundary of the floor on the option bar specify an offset for the floor edges... Click finish edit mode By clicking on the edit type, you can change the material of the floor. 3.6. Adding ceiling Open a ceiling plan view. Click ceiling command under the Architectural tab. In the type selector select a ceiling type and use any tool in the draw panel to sketch a closed loop which define a ceiling. Use walls as ceiling boundaries by default the automatic ceiling tool is active. To create an opening in the ceiling draw another closed loop within its boundary. Then click the finish mode. We can have different types of ceiling as per our requirement such as dropped ceiling, coffer ceiling, coved ceiling, vault ceiling...... In the Revit family we can create our own choice type ceiling and then load it to our project. 3.7. Adding roof The roof command is under the architecture tab use building footprint to sketch the roof boundaries. Open a floor plan view or reflected ceiling plan view. On the draw panel use one of the tool to create the roof boundary and set an offset to the roof the roof boundary should a closed loop. While editing of the roof boundary is over then click the finish mode in the draw panel. In order to change the slope definition of a line, select the line on the properties click define roof slope. Then you can change the slope value or angle. 3.8. Stairs in Revit Select the stair tool under the architecture tab then click the edit type properties and adjust the maximum riser height, minimum tread depth, and the width run. A stair is consisting of three main components, Riser, Tread, and the landing of the stair every component of stair has their own properties and we can access to these properties by clicking in the edit type button. In the drawing panel many shapes of stairs are available such as L-shape, U-shape, Spiral shape and there is a tool that you can skitch the riser boundary and the tread by line and then give it a proper direction. And click the finish Mode. We can have combination of different shapes of stair and the stairs connect one floor to another floor. Stairs are made up of different materials such as, steel, wood, concrete 3.9. Railing in Revit Railing are the components which are placed around the stairs and the roofs Railing is consisting of Top rail, Hand rail, and intermediate rail. Top rail is the highest horizontal element of a railing. Hand rail is an intermediate rail used for hands. They are linked either to a wall or a support. Intermediate Rail any horizontal rail other than the top rail can be considered as a baluster in the railing properties you can change the height of the railing and the support or any other properties. 3.10. Support in railing The element that connects the Hand rail to the wall is known as support. Baluster Elements: Vertical elements which form a part of the railing is known as the baluster. We can set their shape with baluster family. Posts: Posts are the vertical elements at the start and end of baluster of a railing they can be add in Baluster placement. 3.11. Adding Furniture In the load family dialogue box locate the folder that contains the furniture you want to load. Click on open or preview to see the component that you want to load into your project once you loaded the component you can change its dimension. Load any family from the library and use it into your project in an appropriate place. 4. Project data and setting 4.1. Project information After setting the project units, we add some project information to our project. Go to the manage tab and in the ribbon select the project information command. Project information dialog will appear. Add the details about your project in this dialog box in such as project name, project address, company name. Click ok when you are finished adding required information. 4.2. Project parameters and Shared Parameters Project parameters are specific to a single project. They can be added to elements by applying them to multiple categories of elements, such as views or sheets.... Shared parameters are those parameters that can be used in multiple families or projects. Shared and project parameters can be used when you want to schedule or tag something which is not included out of the box for example a custom parameter. But the best option is to use the built-in parameter when it is possible. 5. Materials in Revit To use materials in Revit, click on manage tab and select materials. They allow you to specify the following information Graphical Appearance Physical Graphical characteristic that allows you to control the material looks in a non-rendered such as the color, which displays in a shaded view. The appearance that displays in a rendered view, or realistic view. 5.1. Material Browser We use the material dialog browser to Find and manage materials for elements. Different types of material are available in the project browser such as concrete, Tile, grass, glass, color, woods, these Materials can be used to a part of Design to give the object the realistic View and appearance. 6. Annotation of project Under the annotate Tab we have, adding dimensions, Text, and tags to provide detailed information. After adding dimensions, you can change the dimension text and their appearance the dimensions are used to measure between two points. We have linear dimensions, angular dimensions, radial dimensions, and arch length dimensions. The above-mentioned types of dimensions are used to give more detailed information about the project. 6.1. Tags in Revit We use tags to identify elements in views we can change the appearance of tags and we have two options under the tag, Tag Multiple Elements and tag one element by multiple tag we can tag all untagged elements of a particular category or several categories. By tag one element we can tag a selected Element only. To apply tag to elements based on their categories, select the tag by category tool, example if you want to tag furniture, load furniture tag. If you want the tag to have leader line, select leader and it will add to tag. 7. Creating Schedules 7.1. Door Schedule We create a door schedule to itemizes each door in building model. Create schedules to determine quantities and cost for different element. Open the view tab and select the schedule in the drop-down then in the schedule dialog box select a component from the category list. A default name will be appeared by the name text box then select a schedule building component after that specify the phase then click ok. 7.2. Windows schedule We create a schedule for windows to specify by type and then we can estimate the cost for window elements. We prepare a list of windows in particular groups and then we do the calculation for cost estimation. The same procedure is going to be followed here for windows schedule as we did it for door schedule. 7.2. Creating an Area Plan Click Architecture tab and select area plan from the drop-down menu and the new area plan dialog, for type, selectin area scheme. We select a level for the area plan view and do not duplicate existing views to create unique plan views... For scaling select the area plan scale. Then click ok after creating an area scheme to define an area in a plan you can assign area types to individual area plan in the project. 8. Documentation of a mode 8.1. Documentation of a model is consisting of the following steps Creating the drawing of the model, to share design information with the engineers and the builders we need a detailed drawing of the model or we can have a drafted drawing to show specific details. Refine sheets after creating drawings, refine the appearance of the sheets Publish construction documents or print them and the last step is to track revisions. 9. Phasing in Revit To determine the phase of a work that you want to track for the project, and we create a phase for each. Click the manage tab, and find the phasing panel under the manage tab and by clicking the phasing panel the phasing dialog opens and by default each project has phases called existing and new construction. We cannot rearrange the order of the phasing after adding them before inserting a phase click on before or after under the insert and at the last click ok. Revit Architecture tracks the phase in which elements or view are demolished or created. It lets us to create phases and phases filters that we can apply to the views, which defines how the project appears during the different stage of the work We can use phase filters to control the flow of the building model information into views and schedules. We can apply phases to schedules, Existing, construction, demolition, new construction, and complete are the phases of a project. 9.1. Positioning the model When we import or link any geometry to the current Revit model, use the positioning option of the related import or link dialog to specify how the incoming geometry is placed relative to the host model. There are two methods of positioning, automatic positioning and manual positioning, in automatic positioning we can place the incoming geometry in the host model. We can use the automatic positioning if we know the position of the co-ordinates in the host model and in the imported or linked file. Under the automatic positioning we have Auto-center to center, Auto- origin to origin, auto-by shared coordinates, auto-project base point to project base point. 9.2. Manual positioning By manual positioning we can place the incoming geometry based on a specific point defined in the imported or linked file. Those options give us direct control over the placement of incoming geometry in the host model. Under the Manual positioning we have, Manual origin, Manual center, Place At, orient to view by selecting the manual origin we place the incoming geometry in the current view we adjust the position of the incoming geometry then click the view to place the geometry in the host Revit model. 9.3. Exporting the model to cad (DWG) To export one or more views and sheets click on Revit icon a list of formats will be listed. In the DWG export dialog, select the desired set up to modify the selected set up or to create a new one, click 3 dots, modify export set up After modifying select the views or sheets to export to export a single sheet or view select current view or sheet only. To export multiple sheets or views select in session then select the views and sheets to export. Once you did all the above process then click next and do the required setting in the export cad formats dialog and then click ok. 9.4. Exporting the model to IFC Format Open the file tab in the Revit and list of options will be shown click on export and pick up the IFC option a window will appear where we can specify which IFC classes or types will correspond to which Revit objects, families, and components. An export IFC window will appear and you can select the project that you want to exported a file name for your exported file. If there is any problem while exporting an IFC file click the modify set up and in the new open window make sure you have IFC version 2 into 3. after you are satisfied with your export setting click ok. 9.5. Exporting the model to IFC Format Open the file tab in the Revit and list of options will be shown click on export and pick up the IFC option a window will appear where we can specify which IFC classes or types will correspond to which Revit objects, families, and components. An export IFC window will appear and you can select the project that you want to exported a file name for your exported file. If there is any problem while exporting an IFC file click the modify set up and in the new open window make sure you have IFC version 2 into 3. after you are satisfied with your export setting click ok. 9.6. Exporting the model to Image Format When we export an image, Revit prints any view directly to a raster image file. We can later use this image for printed materials or presentations. Click the file Tab then select image and animation in the export image dialog to change the default path and file name for the image click the change button. Indicate the image under the export range. There are some settings to be done under this stage. Under image size, specify image display properties under this stage we specify the print size and we inter a pixel value. 10. Linking the Cad models Link a cad File to a Revit model when you want to maintain a connection between the file and the model. Then we can use this file in the construction documentation set. First, we should open a Revit model if you want the linked file to display only in a particular View open that view. Click the insert tab and select the linked cad option. In the dialog, for files type, select the desired file. Specify options and click ok and the model will be linked.
