Republic of the Philippines Department of Education Caraga Region SCHOOLS DIVISION OF SURIGAO DEL SUR DESIGN PROPOSAL A. Information about the applicant Name of Applicant/Proponent: SHEENE T. ELPEDANG Position Agency/Functional Division: Teacher – III B. Profile of the Program or Course i. Title of the Program or course: School-based Journalism Training for Coaches and Student-journalists a. Activity Request Number/Authority to Conduct Number: b. LDIS Tracking Number: HRD - Journalism is a powerful tool in developing students’ critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills. Through campus publications, studentjournalists are given the opportunity to express ideas, report on relevant school and community issues, and promote transparency and awareness among their peers. Coaches or campus paper advisers play a key role in guiding these young writers, ensuring they uphold journalistic ethics and standards. However, San Miguel National High School faces challenges in maintaining the quality of campus journalism due to a lack of structured training for both advisers and student-journalists. Often, coaches are assigned without sufficient background in journalism, while students struggle with the technical aspects of news writing, editorial work, and publication layout. This results in underdeveloped school papers that fail to reach their full potential as tools for learning and information. To address these challenges, this training design provides a focused, school-based training that aims to equip both coaches and student-journalists with the necessary knowledge and skills in journalism. The sessions are designed to strengthen their competencies in planning, writing, editing, ethical reporting, and publication management. Ultimately, the goal is to empower the school’s publication to become vibrant platform for student expression and responsible journalism.
