INTRODUCTION The main takeaway from this section is that a translation method justifies the entire translated text, while a translation technique focuses more on analyzing the components of the language. Technique: A way to make or do something related to art. Translation Method: A way of carrying out a translator's objective; a global preference that affects the whole text. Five basic characteristics of translation techniques: affect the translation results. compare the SL with the TL. affect the smallest units of text (words, phrases, sentences). are natural and contextual discursive (logical). are functional. In practice, a translator can use one, two, three, or four techniques when translating a text. These are described as: 1. Single Technique: Using only one technique. ST: She loves reading books. TT: Cô ấy thích đọc sách. Here, the translation uses a literal technique without any additional adjustments. 2. Duplet/Couplet Approach: Combining two techniques. ST: It’s raining cats and dogs. TT: Trời mưa như trút nước. Here, the translator used a modulation technique to shift the idiomatic expression and a cultural adaptation technique to make it natural in Vietnamese. 3. Triplet Approach: Combining three techniques. ST: He kicked the bucket. TT: Anh ta đã về với tổ tiên. Here, the translator used a cultural adaptation technique, a modulation technique, and an idiomatic technique to convey the euphemism naturally in Vietnamese. 4. Quadruplet Approach: Using four techniques. ST: The early bird catches the worm. TT: Ai đến trước thì được phục vụ trước. Here, the translator used a generalization technique, a modulation technique, a cultural adaptation technique, and an idiomatic technique to adapt the proverb to Vietnamese culture. TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES A. DIRECT TECHNIQUES 1. Borrowing (Vay mượn) A word or phrase taken from one language and used in another language. Dùng nguyên từ gốc (giữ nguyên cách viết và âm đọc). ST: Internet TT: Internet 2. Calque (Phỏng dịch) A word or phrase borrowed from another language by using literal or word-for-word translation. Dịch từng phần (morpheme) của từ gốc sang ngôn ngữ đích. ST: skyscraper TT: nhà chọc trời (literal translation of each morpheme) 3. Literal (Dịch sát nghĩa) Translating a word or expression word by word, based on the function and meaning at the sentence level. Dịch sát từng từ, nhưng có chỉnh ngữ pháp cho tự nhiên hơn. ST: The sun rises in the east. TT: Mặt trời mọc ở hướng đông. B. INDIRECT TECHNIQUES 1. Transposition (Chuyển vị) Transposition changes a grammatical category. It is similar to a "shift." Thay đổi loại từ hoặc cấu trúc ngữ pháp. ST: She sings beautifully. TT: Cô ấy hát rất hay. (adjective "beautifully" becomes adverb "rất hay") 2. Modulation (Điều chỉnh góc nhìn) Modulation changes the point of view, focus, or cognitive categories. Thay đổi góc nhìn hay cách diễn đạt, giữ nghĩa tương đương. ST: It’s not expensive. TT: Giá cả phải chăng. (negative to positive modulation) 3. Adaptation (Thích nghi văn hóa) Adaptation uses a recognized equivalent between two situations and cultural equivalence. Thay đổi yếu tố văn hóa sao cho phù hợp với người đọc. ST: Halloween TT: Lễ hội ma (adapted to Vietnamese cultural context) 4. Compensation (Bù nghĩa) Compensation introduces the source text element of information or stylistic effect to the target text because it cannot be replaced in the same place. Thêm nghĩa vào chỗ khác khi một phần nào đó không thể dịch thẳng. ST: The wind whispered through the trees. TT: Gió thổi nhẹ qua những tán cây. (compensates for the poetic effect) 5. Substitution (Thay thế phi ngôn ngữ) Substitution, whether linguistically or paralinguistically, helps translators change linguistic elements (e.g., intonation and gestures). Dùng hành động, biểu cảm thay vì từ. ST: The Arab gesture of putting your hand on your heart. TT: Cảm ơn (translated as "Thank you" in Vietnamese). 6. Variation (Biến đổi phong cách) Variation attempts to change linguistic or linguistic elements, both intonation and gestures, which has impacts on language variation aspects. Thay đổi phong cách, giọng điệu, văn phong, phù hợp với ngữ cảnh. ST: A character’s dialect in a novel. TT: Adapted to a Southern Vietnamese dialect for local relevance. 7. Description (Diễn giải) Replaces a term or expression with a description of its form or/and function. Thay thế một từ hoặc cụm từ bằng cách mô tả hình dáng, chức năng hoặc ý nghĩa của nó. ST: "Scone" (a British baked good) TT: "Bánh nướng nhỏ ăn kèm với trà" (describes the food instead of translating directly) 8. Discursive Creation (Sáng tạo diễn ngôn) Establishes a temporary equivalence totally being unpredictable out of context. Dịch dựa trên ngữ cảnh, tạo ra cách diễn đạt mới không có sẵn trong từ điển. ST: "La ley de la calle" (Spanish for "The Law of the Street") TT: "Cá lớn nuốt cá bé" (adapted to a Vietnamese idiom about survival) 9. Established Equivalent (Tương đương cố định) Attempts to use a term or expression recognized by the dictionary as an equivalent word(s) in the recipient language. Dùng từ/cụm từ có sẵn trong tiếng Việt, được công nhận rộng rãi. ST: "Software" TT: "Phần mềm" (direct dictionary equivalent) 10. Generalization (Khái quát hóa) A translation technique that uses more general or neutral terms in the target language. Dùng từ rộng nghĩa hơn, ít chi tiết hơn bản gốc. ST: "She bought tulips, roses, and daisies." TT: "Cô ấy mua hoa." (reduces specific flower types to a general term) 11. Particularization (Cụ thể hóa) Tries to use a more precise or specific or concrete term in the target language. Dùng từ chi tiết, cụ thể hơn bản gốc. ST: "He drank juice." TT: "Anh ấy uống nước cam." (specifies the type of juice) 12. Reduction (Lược bỏ) Reduces some sentence elements or items in the source text that are considered unnecessary stated in the target text. Bỏ bớt từ không cần thiết trong tiếng Việt để tránh dài dòng. ST: "She nodded her head in agreement." TT: "Cô ấy gật đầu." (removes redundant "in agreement" since nodding implies it) TRANSFORMATION TECHNIQUES I. INDIRECT TECHNIQUES 1. Substitution (Thay thế phi ngôn ngữ) Replacing linguistic elements (words) with paralinguistic ones (gestures, intonation) or vice versa. Thay từ bằng cử chỉ/hành động hoặc ngược lại. ST: Arab gesture of hand on heart. TT: "Cảm ơn" (translated as "Thank you" in Vietnamese). 2. Variation (Biến đổi phong cách) Adjusting tone, dialect, or style to suit the target audience. Thay đổi giọng điệu/phương ngữ cho phù hợp ngữ cảnh. ST: A character’s Cockney dialect in English. TT: Chuyển sang giọng miền Nam (adapted to Southern Vietnamese dialect). II. STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION TECHNIQUES 1. Replacement (Thay thế cấu trúc) Changing grammatical categories (e.g., noun → verb). Đổi loại từ (danh từ thành động từ, v.v.). ST: "Her decision was quick." (noun) TT: "Cô ấy quyết định rất nhanh." (verb). 2. Addition (Thêm từ) Adding words for clarity/fluency. Thêm từ để rõ nghĩa hơn. ST: "She ate." TT: "Cô ấy ăn một cách ngon lành." (added for vividness). 3. Reduction/Omission (Lược bỏ) Removing redundant/implied details. Bỏ từ không cần thiết. ST: "He nodded his head." TT: "Anh ấy gật đầu." (omitted "his head"). III. LEXICAL TRANSFORMATION TECHNIQUES 1. Antonymic Translation (Dịch đối nghĩa) Switching positive ↔ negative forms. Đổi khẳng định thành phủ định hoặc ngược lại. ST: "It’s not difficult." TT: "Rất dễ." (negative → positive). 2. Metonymy (Hoán dụ) Using a related term to represent something (e.g., "the crown" for monarchy). Dùng một biểu tượng đặc trưng để chỉ đối tượng liên quan đến. ST: Crown TT: Vua/hoàng hậu (symbolic reference). 3. Euphemism (Nói giảm nói tránh – Uyển ngữ) Softening harsh/offensive terms. Dùng từ nhẹ nhàng hơn. ST: "He passed away." (Used PASS AWAY intead of DIE) TT: "Ông ấy đã ra đi." 4. Simile (So sánh) Comparing two different things using "like" or "as." So sánh trực tiếp bằng “like” (như) hoặc “as” (như là). ST: "Brave as a lion." TT: "Dũng cảm như sư tử." 5. Metaphor (Ẩn dụ) Describing something in terms of another to highlight shared qualities. Dùng hình ảnh cụ thể để mô tả điều trừu tượng, không nói theo nghĩa đen. ST: "Time is money." TT: "Thời gian là vàng." 6. Hyperbole (Cường điệu) Using extreme exaggeration for emphasis, humor, or dramatic effect. Cố tình nói quá để tạo ấn tượng, gây hài hoặc nhấn mạnh. ST: "I’ve told you a million times!" TT: "Tôi đã nói cả triệu lần rồi!" 7. Synecdoche (Hoán dụ bộ phận ↔ toàn thể) Representing a whole by a part, or a part by the whole. Dùng một phần để chỉ toàn thể, hoặc toàn thể thay cho một phần. ST: "All hands on deck." ("hands" = sailors). TT: "Tất cả lên boong." 8. Personification (Nhân hóa) Attributing human qualities to non-human entities. Gán tính cách, cảm xúc con người cho vật vô tri hoặc khái niệm trừu tượng. ST: "The wind whispered." TT: "Gió thì thầm." 9. Zoosemy (Ẩn dụ động vật) Using animal imagery to characterize human traits or behaviors. Gán đặc tính động vật cho người để mô tả bản tính hoặc hành vi. ST: "She’s a snake.” TT: "Cô ấy gian xảo lắm." TRANSLATION METHODS 🔷 A. NHÓM 1 – DỊCH THIÊN VỀ NGÔN NGỮ NGUỒN (Source-Oriented) Word-for-Word Translation Place directly words of the target text under the source text version (interlinear translation method). Dịch từng từ theo đúng thứ tự gốc, không thay đổi gì cả. ST: The cat sits on the mat. TT: Con mèo ngồi trên tấm thảm. Literal Translation Newmark (1988) defines literal translation as a translation that falls between word-for-word translation and free translation. In the process of translation, translators look for grammatical constructions in the source language that match, are equivalent to, or are close to those in the target language. Dịch sát từng từ, có chỉnh ngữ pháp. ST: It's raining cats and dogs. TT: Trời mưa như trút nước. Faithful Translation According to Newmark (1988), faithful translation seeks to reproduce the original text's contextual meaning precisely within the target text's grammatical structure. Cultural words are preserved, but idioms may sound unnatural. Giữ nguyên cả ngữ pháp, văn hóa, từ vựng, kể cả nếu khó hiểu. ST: He is a man of letters. TT: Anh ấy là một người của chữ nghĩa. Semantic Translation Newmark (1988) and Machali (2000) define semantic translation as a more flexible method than faithful translation. It considers the aesthetic elements of the source language, compromising the meaning within reasonableness. Gần giống faithful, nhưng dịch mềm mại hơn để người đọc dễ hiểu hơn. ST: Time flies like an arrow. TT: Thời gian trôi nhanh như tên bắn. (dịch linh hoạt nhưng vẫn giữ văn phong gốc) 🔍 Khi nào dùng nhóm này? → Dùng khi dịch văn học, tài liệu học thuật, thơ, bài phát biểu trang trọng, khi người dịch muốn giữ lại giọng văn và màu sắc gốc. 🔶 B. NHÓM 2 – DỊCH THIÊN VỀ NGÔN NGỮ ĐÍCH (Target-Oriented) Adaptation Newmark (1988) describes adaptation as the freest translation method that leads to the closest equivalence in the target language, maintaining the source language and prioritizing target readers. Thay thế yếu tố văn hóa đặc thù bằng yếu tố tương đương trong văn hóa đích để đảm bảo tính phù hợp. Thường dùng trong thơ, quảng cáo, thành ngữ. ST: Snow White TT: Bạch Tuyết (adapted to Vietnamese folklore) Free Translation Reproduces the general meaning of the original text in the target text and may or may not closely follow the form of the original text. Truyền đạt ý chung của văn bản nguồn mà không bám sát hình thức. Thường diễn giải hoặc mở rộng. ST: The early bird catches the worm. TT: Ai đến trước thì được phục vụ trước. Idiomatic Translation Uses natural idioms, expressions, and colloquialisms in the target language. A truly idiomatic translation does not look like a translation; it reads like a native work. Sử dụng thành ngữ, cách diễn đạt tự nhiên trong ngôn ngữ đích. Bản dịch nghe như bản gốc. ST: Break a leg! TT: Chúc may mắn! (Vietnamese idiom). Communicative Translation Communicative translation basically emphasizes the transfer of messages. This translation method is very concerned with the reader or listener who does not expect any difficulties or obscurity in the translated text. Dịch sao cho dễ hiểu, dễ tiếp nhận, hiệu quả giao tiếp cao. ST: Beware of the dog! TT: Cẩn thận chó dữ! 🔍 Khi nào dùng nhóm này? → Dùng khi dịch quảng cáo, hội thoại, văn bản truyền thông, sách thiếu nhi, phim phụ đề, nơi mà độc giả đích cần hiểu nhanh và dễ dàng. HƯỚNG DẪN LÀM BÀI 🎯 Dạng 1: Nhận diện phương pháp dịch Câu hỏi: “Hãy xác định phương pháp dịch nào được sử dụng trong câu sau.” Ví dụ: EN: “He is not as young as he used to be.” VI: “Anh ấy đã già hơn trước.” 👉 Đây là Communicative translation (dịch thoát, nhấn hiệu quả giao tiếp). Cách làm: 1. So sánh cấu trúc gốc và câu dịch. 2. Nếu sát nghĩa, cấu trúc giữ nguyên → literal/faithful. 3. Nếu thay đổi mạnh, chuyển ngữ tự nhiên → communicative/adaptation/free. 🎯 Dạng 2: So sánh 2 phương pháp dịch Câu hỏi: “So sánh giữa semantic và communicative translation.” Trả lời mẫu: Semantic giữ màu sắc văn bản gốc, dùng trong văn học. Communicative ưu tiên người đọc đích hiểu nhanh, mượt. Ví dụ: He passed away o Semantic: Anh ấy qua đời. o Communicative: Anh ấy mất rồi. 🎯 Dạng 3: Tự dịch và chọn phương pháp phù hợp Câu tiếng Anh: “She broke the silence with a joke.” Bạn cần dịch và nêu phương pháp. 📝 Gợi ý: → “Cô ấy phá vỡ sự im lặng bằng một câu đùa.” → Phương pháp: Literal translation → “Cô ấy cất tiếng đùa phá tan bầu không khí im lặng.” → Phương pháp: Semantic / Communicative translation - End -
