Lil Nas-X or Montero rose to starlight in 2019 thanks to his hit song “Old Town Road”. Through
his rise to fame, he has been able to be an advocate for the LGBTQ community, and through his music,
he has pushed boundaries to challenge common beliefs. Because of his outright support of the LGTBQ
community, and his newer music video “Call Me by Your Name” he has faced a lot of backlashes from
conservatives. They claim his content is inappropriate and too uncensored for mass consumption. In my
argument, I would defend Montero and provide support for the way he publicly makes statements.
A. Montero explicitly and openly presents his music videos as LGBTQ positive (I would try to find
information of controversy around his music videos and deeper meanings);
B. On social media Montero publicly stands up for the LGTBQ community and faces harsh
comments from conservative icons (I would look up articles on how social media has an effect of
public perceptions);
C. Imagery in his videos is usually somewhat explicit and appeals to a younger audience in order to
present new ways of thinking and acceptance (I would find the explained deeper meanings of
his lyrics and imagery in order to convey messages.
In my final argument, I would address the counterargument and attempt to perceive the
information from the other point of view. I would want to find direct quotes from criticizers and haters
of his content. From this, I would attempt to establish a viewpoint from the perspective of the opposite
side to formulate an idea of why they think what they think. To further ad to my paper I might want to
find other artist who have attempted to stand up for LGBTQ rights and didn’t succeed.
