Questions to answer:
Initial Stage
1. How did that experience (participation in the virtual disaster) feel?
The triage and more acute patient care felt a little chaotic, almost like a really busy ED
but less structured. The less acute cases in the purple and green tents felt like some of my
experiences with the OKMRC.
2. What were you thinking while participating in this virtual simulation? (other than about
finishing it )
I was thinking about how clear communication, and the relay of information was
paramount to successfully managing a crisis.
3. After reviewing the moral distress presentation, how did you feel about that subject?
It is definitely one of the more difficult scenarios that one may come across. I think you
have to keep your scope of practice and the protection of your license balanced with
doing everything possible to improve the outcome of your patients.
4. What were your strengths during the virtual simulation? Your weaknesses?
I do well with maintaining a clear head in crisis scenarios especially with adult patients.
On the other side, I can become more emotional when I have pediatric patients and
sometimes lose perspective.
Experience Stage
1. Discuss the rationale for the actions and interventions performed during the simulation.
I think the actions and interventions taken showed clear foundations in evidence-based
practice and experience gained in response to past disasters. Practicing for future
scenarios using mock disasters will streamline first responders’ actions and improve
patient outcomes as well as the efficient use of available resources.
2. Did you notice any safety issues with the patients or the environment? If so, list them
The only real issue I noticed was the possibility of blood born pathogen spread between
survivors prior to triage. I’m not sure that mitigating this risk is realistic or feasible but
that is one thing that caught my attention.
3. How could personal beliefs, biases, and values have influenced your decision-making if
you were a nurse responding to this kind of disaster in real life?
I find that sometimes I lack sympathy for patients that I believe are overreacting to pain
or injuries. I realize pain is subjective and everyone has different thresholds and it
something I continue to work on.
4. Explain how teamwork is important during disaster management.
The clear communication and relay of information that comes from good teamwork
promotes efficiency and prompt and appropriate care which improves patient outcomes
and resource usage.
Application Stage
1. How can you use what you learned in this simulation to enhance your professional
nursing practice?
Incorporating the lessons in teamwork and communication will help no matter what the
professional setting and pay dividends in positive patient outcomes.
2. How can you use what you learned in this simulation to enhance communication with
other members of the interprofessional team in your daily nursing practice?
This seems a bit redundant with my answer to the prior question, but clear and concise
relay of information is vital to proper care and resource management. Any breakdown in
communication will increase wait times, decrease the prompt application of care and
resources and decrease the effectiveness of time and care given.
