Abstract
"The Impact of Increasing Essential Commodity Prices on Bangladesh's Standard of Living."
Economic stability. It is a mixed-method approaches that are qualitative & quantitative
information. The main objectives are that the study will focus on analyzing the trends and root
causes behind the rising prices of essential commodities in Bangladesh that Special attention will
be given to understanding how low- and middle-income families adapt to these challenges
through various coping mechanisms. Furthermore, the research seeks to explore the broader
implications of price hikes on standard of living, covering aspects such as income, lifestyle,
consumption patterns, and food security. Alongside +this, the study will critically evaluate the
effectiveness of existing government policies and market interventions in price control, with the
aim of suggesting practical strategies for stabilizing commodity prices and enhancing the overall
quality of life. The expected outcomes of this research include a comprehensive understanding
of the main factors driving the rise in essential commodity prices in Bangladesh and their
implications for households, particularly low- and middle-income families.
Introduction
The prices of essential commodities such as food, fuel, and basic household items in Bangladesh
have been rising continuously, imposing significant challenges for consumers, especially lowand middle-income households. This price hike impacts food security, purchasing power, and
overall well-being.
Key questions arise:
What are the main factors driving the price increases in essential commodities?
How has the rise in prices affected the daily lives and standard of living of different
population groups in Bangladesh?
What coping strategies are families adopting to survive in this situation?
How can government policies and market regulation help control the adverse effects of
inflation?
What measures can be taken to mitigate the adverse effects of these price hikes?

This research seeks to explore the socio-economic consequences of rising commodity prices
on the daily lives of ordinary Bangladeshi citizens.
Aims & Objectives
Aim:
To examine the impact of rising prices of essential commodities on the standard of living in
Bangladesh.
Objectives
1. To analyze trends and underlying causes of the rising prices of essential commodities in
Bangladesh.
2. To assess the coping mechanisms of low- and middle-income families.
3. To recommend possible strategies to stabilize prices and improve the standard of living.
4. To assess the impact of these price increases on the standard of living, including income,
lifestyle, consumption patterns, and food security.
5. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing government policies and market interventions
aimed at controlling prices.
Rationale / Justification of the Study
Rising prices have become a pressing concern in Bangladesh, affecting millions of people’s
access to basic necessities and pushing many toward financial insecurity. The study is significant
because the continuous rise in essential commodity prices is eroding the standard of living,
especially for vulnerable groups. This study aims to provide empirical evidence and informed
recommendations to support sustainable living standards and socio-economic stability in
Bangladesh.
Related Literature Review
Inflation and Food Security: Previous studies (Rahman, 2020; Hossain, 2021) highlight
that inflation disproportionately affects poor households as they spend the majority of
income on food.
Standard of Living: Research by Alam (2019) suggests that rising prices reduce access
to nutrition, healthcare, and education.
Government Policy Impact: Studies (World Bank, 2022; BIDS, 2021) indicate that
subsidies, import policies, and market regulation have partial success in controlling
prices.
Coping Mechanisms: Evidence from studies in South Asia shows families reduce food
quality, cut non-food expenses, and depend on loans during high inflation periods.
The expected outcomes of this research include a comprehensive understanding of the main
factors driving the rise in essential commodity prices in Bangladesh and their implications for
households, particularly low- and middle-income families.

Methodology
Research Design: A mixed-method approach (qualitative + quantitative).
Quantitative data: Collect and analyze secondary data on price trends, inflation,
household income, and consumption patterns from Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics,
Bangladesh Bank, and government reports.
Qualitative data: Conduct surveys and interviews with affected households,
government officials, and market traders to gain insights on lived experiences and policy
perceptions.
Sample Population: Households from urban (Dhaka, Chattogram) and rural areas
(Rajshahi, Barishal).
Sample Size: 200 households, selected randomly with stratification by income groups.
Data Collection Tools:
o Structured questionnaires (for household survey).
o Focus group discussions (FGDs).
o Key informant interviews (government officials, economists, traders).
Data Analysis: Statistical tools (SPSS/Excel) for quantitative data; thematic analysis for
qualitative data.
Expected Outcomes / Beneficiaries
A clear understanding of how rising prices affect consumption, health, education, and
overall standard of living.
Insights into vulnerable groups most severely affected by price inflation.
Policy recommendations to stabilize prices and protect low-income households.
Beneficiaries include policymakers, NGOs, researchers, social welfare organizations,
economists, and the general public, especially low-income households.
