Verbatim Dialogue
CL: I was reading an article on
my way here. I’ve kind of been
following the um situation with
Hispanics being afraid to be
deported. Um. And this whole
situation with this new
administration uh and it just
got me thinking because one of
my students came in today, and
It's just a big concern…
Right
CL: And it it just really bothers
me a lot because I do a lot to…I
do a lot to…I do a lot for the
Hispanic students that I serve. I
got so many notes on my
bulletin board in Spanish
CO: Mmm.

CL: Um from my kids that I
serve at work. And it’s
just…they’re so sad. One one
girl came to my office today.
She was just crying and all
upset because uh I think…I
think they deported her mom
last week when she went to
visit her sisters in Texas. And
they deported her, and it just
it’s bothering her a whole lot.
And it’s bothering all the entire
Hispanic population of the
schools. The morale has
changed and everything. I’m
just trying to figure out what
else I can do. Outside of you
know, I go out of my way and
they’re they’re happy with me
um I go out of my way. I’ve
gone out of my way um, and I
can show you what I’m talking
about. I’ve gone out of my way
to um to learn Spanish.
CO: Okay!
CL: So if you look at my my
duolingo I’m on day 793.
CO: Oh wow!
CL: 793 days of straight Spanish
CO: Oh my goodness.

CL: So I do a Spanish lesson
everyday because like I said we
have a large Hispanic
population.
CO: Right
CL: And then. Anybody tries to
come into the school or leave
the school. Enroll or withdraw.
They have to come see me.
CO: Mhm.
CL: So um we get a lot of
Hispanic people that come into
enroll and nobody speaks
Spanish other than the ESL
person and the Spanish
teacher.
CO: Right

CL: And if they’re not available.
They’re gonna come see me. So
I-I ha-I I feel better being able
to enough so that they won’t
feel uncomfortable uh and it
just it-it it makes them feel a lot
better. To know that they can
actually have a conversation
with me without having to talk
to the phone or write
something in google translate.
Uh it just makes them feel

better. Makes me feel better
too because I’m-I’m doing I’m
doing pretty good in Spanish.
I’m doing alright. I do enough to
get by!
CO: (laughs) Right it helps
you…I guess continue
practicing.
CL: It does! It does. And it-it it
makes me. I-I practice more
now because I accidentally paid
for it. So it’s like $99 for a year.
I didn’t try to pay for it. I-I hit
the wrong button.
CO: As Bob Ross says, “Happy
Accidents!” (laughs)
CL: Happy Accident. It’s a-I
mean-I was-I was gonna
continue to it anyway, but I get
more features um on the paid
version.
CO: Mmm.
CL: Than I was just downloading
the free apps, so of- but uh I-I
love it. So uh I-I just like being
able to help everybody because
again I’m the first person of
contact. It doesn’t matter what
anybody needs in this school.
Whether it’s the principal,
whether it’s the teacher…it
doesn’t matter. Whatever
problem anybody in the world

1.
CO: Mmm. (laughs)
CL: Seems to have they’re going
to tell them they need to talk to
me.
CO: Right because you’re…from
what I’m hearing you’re saying
you are the first per-point of
contact and also a lot of times
the last point of contact for
when they’re about to
withdraw and…
CL: Yeah well I’m-I’m well the
security guard is the first
person of contact.
CO: (laughs) Well (laughs)
CL: But uh you know, they justwhen they don’t know. They
just refer everybody to me.
CO: Right
CL: So it doesn’t matter if they
really need to see me or not.
They’re going to see me.
CO: Right
CL: But it-it’s not-it used to
bother me, but it doesn’t
bother me any more because
you know I know I can help
somebody, and it makes the
person feel a lot better. If you
can go somewhere and get
some help
CO: Mhm.
A.) SUM
B.) 2
It sounds like the students first
see you when they enroll and
typically see you last when they
withdraw. It sounds like a big
responsibility, but you seem
happy to do it.

in your transcript, continue transcribing until you have included at least 10 counselor responses. Add more rows to the table as necessary.
2.
CL: Instead of being given the
runaround all the time. Like if
you go to a men’s clothing store
and you wanna buy a pair of
pants…so-can-we need to get
John to help you…
CO: Mhm.
CL: Well I can’t help you. They
need to get Susan to help you
CO: Right
CL:You not gon-you know
you’re gonna feel some kind of
way.
CO: Right
CL: And you gotta go around to
4 or 5 different people just to
get a pair of pants so that’s why
it doesn’t bother me any more.
I just feel like, you know, it
makes…anybody feel okay if
you can get help. The help you
need. Pleasant help
CO: Mhm.
CL: Cuz all help ain’t good help
for-pleasant help.
CO: No yeah definitely. I
A.)PARA
mean…like you were saying you B.)4
seemed…at first you were
apprehensive with what the job
was sort of telling you to do but
now you’re… I guess reframing
it in some ways of like…I can
now help more people this way.
Right. It sounds as if you had a
lot more responsibilities than
you were expecting in this job,
but you seem to see it as a way
to help more people rather
than a burden.

4.
CL: Yeah yeah because I mean
you have to keep in mind. I’m
responsible for 700 students.
CO: Right. Wow! That’s a lot!
(laughs)
CL: All of their data. I’ve got all
of the teachers.
CO: Mhm
CL: All of their data. All of their
classes. All of their grades. All
the students’ transcripts.
CO: Right
CL: Whatever problems the
principal may have needing
reports and can’t figure out
how to get reports um it all
comes through me.
CO: Right what I’m hearing is
you-you were very
apprehensive of that big
responsibility but nowCL: No! No. No. No.
CO: Oh no?
CL: No never-never. Never. I
never shy away from a
challenge. In life!
CO: (laughs)
CL: Ever. No sir.
CO: Hey and that’s probably
why you’re doing so well in
Spanish right now (laughs)
A.) PARA
B.)2
It sounds like you had a lot of
responsibilities. Tell me more
about your emotions when you
first started this job.

I can see why you were able to
continue learning Spanish
through duolingo for 793 days.

in your transcript, continue transcribing until you have included at least 10 counselor responses. Add more rows to the table as necessary.
5.
CL: (laughs) I don’t-I don’t shy
away from challenges.
Sometimes you know it-it can,
it can become a bit frustrating.
CO: Right
CL: You know because-you
know and I did tell them in
faculty staff meeting the other
day. I’m not the only person in
this school.
CO: Right
CL: So if somebody has a
problem you don’t always have
to refer them, their parents,
their grandparents, their
sisters, their brothers, their
uncles and aunts to me
CO: (laughs) Right
CL: Somebody else in this
building can help them so
CO: Right but at the end of the
day, you were happy to do it.
A.) CLAR
B.)3
I feel that you are happy to do
this despite sounding like it can
be stressful at times.
a.) FFR/CLAR
b.) 4
CL: Oh all the time! All the time
and-and now like I said with the
Hispanic population if-if the
Hispanic teacher Is not there.
The-the ESL person
CO: Right
CL: If she’s not there, they don’t
ever ask for the Spanish
teacher. They either want the
ESL person or Ms. Ruffin. So, it’s
* After you have transcribed at least 10 minutes of dialogue, count your responses. If there are fewer than 10 substantive counselor responses

all good. They-they’ve-they’veI’ve been to a couple of homes.
They invite me to the parties.
CO: (laughs)
CL: The the the family
gatherings. It’s nice. It’s really
nice.
CO: That must feel like a pretty
big honor.
CL: It is! It is. It is. I’m the-I’m
the escuela.
CO: (laughs) Escuela
CL: I’m Ms. Escuela
CO: (laughs) Escuela
CL: Ms. Ms. School (laughs)
CO: (laughs) That’s good. So
yeah from what I’m hearing
is…you’re basically the person
that always the Spanish people
are going towards if the ESL
people aren’t available.
CL: Yes. Yes. Not just the
Spanish people anybody.
CO: Right. Well yeah just
any…any person who’s like
needing help.
CL: Anyb-I-I if if-tomorrow if
you decide to call Wenonah
High School
CO: (laughs)
CL: And you tell them you have
a problem they’re going to
A.) SUM
B.) 3
It sounds like the Spanish
students at your school seem to
trust you and care for you, and
you trust and care about them
in return.

transfer you to Ms. Ruffin. It
doesn’t matter what the
problem is.
7CO: Wow that’s interesting.
st
1
Yeah it seems like you-right
part now as a data analyst…I know
that we talked in the past about
you becoming like a counselor
CL: Mhm.
7CO: In the…school but it already
2nd
seems like you’re already doing
part that job.
a.) INTERP/L&T
b.)4
I remember that we talked
about you becoming a school
counselor, but I feel you’re
already doing that in your
current job.
a.) FFR/L&T
b.) 4
CL: I am! I am. I am.
CO: Hence why you’re
switching up (laughs)
CL: Yeah. Yeah. I am. I-I mean
I’m already doing a lot of
counseling, and we have three
counselors already. I’d be
counselor #4.
CO: Mmm.
CL: Uh and because we work so
closely together uh I help them
with a lot of their case load
already.
CO: Right
CL: So it was just a matter of
me being put in the position
but since they-they wrote the
position up wrong.
CO: Right yeah right
* After you have transcribed at least 10 minutes of dialogue, count your responses. If there are fewer than 10 substantive counselor responses
in your transcript, continue transcribing until you have included at least 10 counselor responses. Add more rows to the table as necessary.
8.
CL: I’ve gotta wait until the um
the beginning of the 25-26
school year.
CO: Mm.
CL: Before I can move into the
position.
CO: Right yeah
CL: But that’s fine. I’ll-I’ll still be
the same person with a little
less responsibility probably
after 4 or 5 months.
CO: Mhm
CL: Because uh my principal
already told me that he’s going
to need me to keep maintaining
the data until they-they hire
somebody
CO: They can hire someone
new
CL: Yeah
CO: Yeah but honestly it seems
like you’re just changing titles
a.) INTERP/CLAR
b.)3
From what I’m hearing, it
sounds to me like you’re
changing seating positions
rather than different career
paths.
a.) SUM/CLAR
b.) 4
CL: Yeah because I- I’ll be-I’ll be
in the same office.
CO: Right
CL: My extension will still be
the same so it-it’s-it’ll all work
out because I mean the
students will still have access to
me.
* After you have transcribed at least 10 minutes of dialogue, count your responses. If there are fewer than 10 substantive counselor responses
in your transcript, continue transcribing until you have included at least 10 counselor responses. Add more rows to the table as necessary.
9.
CO: Mm.
CL: The only thing with this is
like, right now, I deal with any
grade level. Once I actually
become the-a school counselor.
I’ll have one grade level. So
instead of me dealing with 700
students
CO: (laughs)
CL: I’ll probably be dealing with
about 175 specific students.
CO: Right…I mean it sounds like
you’re excited about…getting
that position even if it’s
CL: Oh yeah definitely because
um you know I’m-I’m-I’m 56.
CO: Mhm.
CL: So I’m probably gonna work
another eight years
CO: Right
CL: But uh I work in public
education
CO: Right
CL: In the state of Alabama. So
the way public education in the
state of Alabama works is
you’re retirement is based on
your last 3 years of salary.
CO: Mhm.
CL: And then um, it’s like the
three highest years so
CO: Right
a.) Ref-F
b.) 4
I feel excited and happy for you
as you talk about your new
position.
a) UofSLF/FFR
b) 4
* After you have transcribed at least 10 minutes of dialogue, count your responses. If there are fewer than 10 substantive counselor responses
in your transcript, continue transcribing until you have included at least 10 counselor responses. Add more rows to the table as necessary.
CL: I need for my base salary to
be at least $100,000
CO: Gotcha
CL: So I can retire and sit on the
porch and lean all the way back.
CO: Right. I remCL: And wait on the mailman
CO: I remember when we
talked about it with you’re
uncle?
CL: My grandfather
CO: Grandfather, sorry
CL: Yeah. So I-I figure with-with
um if I can retire at $100,000
um in 8 years
CO: Mhm.
CL: And that’ll make me 64/65.
So if I can retire at $100,000
plus social security, I should be
guaranteed at least right at
$10,000 a month.
CO: Right
CL: So I should be able to live
comfortably
CO: Right
CL: At $10,000
CO: And I-and I hope-I hope you
get there (laughs)
CL: Yeah because I mean so
many people uh when they
retire they have to keep
working
* After you have transcribed at least 10 minutes of dialogue, count your responses. If there are fewer than 10 substantive counselor responses
in your transcript, continue transcribing until you have included at least 10 counselor responses. Add more rows to the table as necessary.
CO: Right
CL: I don’t wanna do that.
CO: (laughs) Exactly
CL: Since my grandfather did
absolutely nothing, and he-it
was 1984…’84/’85 when he
retired.
CO: And he wasCL: And-and his-his social
security check was $4200
CO: Right
CL: His retirement checks
CO: Right
CL: was $4200. That was his
income at 84/85. That’s a
substantial income back then.
So I wanna be at at least
$10,000.
CO: (laughs) Right
CL: In 8 years. That should-that
should get me where I need to
be.
10. CO: Yeah sounds like a great
part plan! (silence pause). Going
1
back to the whole Hispanics
with…them relying on you with
all the news that’s going on
obviously they’ve been
CL: Mhm.
10. CO: Obviously they’ve been
part afraid

10. CO: Of the things that have
part been happening.
3
CL: Very afraid.
10. CO: I guess a question I would
part have for them is…how (pause

for silence) How are they
coping like as a generalCL: They’re not.
