Alternative ending
In the alternative ending of Hard Times, towards the ending of the book the characters' lives take a
turn for the better. Mr. Gradgrind, who has always been a firm believer in utilitarianism, begins to
see the error of his ways. He starts to understand that emotions, imagination and the arts play a
crucial role in life, and begins to incorporate these values into his teachings.
Sissy Jupe, who has always been an outsider due to her background as a circus performer, becomes
an influential figure in the town. She inspires the children of Coketown to break free from the
constraints of their monotonous lives and embrace their individuality. Sissy becomes a mentor to the
younger generation and helps them develop their own creativity and imagination.
Louisa Gradgrind, who has been oppressed by her father's philosophy all her life, finally finds the
courage to stand up for herself. She discovers that there is more to life than just facts and figures,
and begins to embrace her own emotions and desires. She finds love with a kind and gentle man who
accepts her for who she is, and together they start a family.
Stephen Blackpool, who has faced numerous challenges in life, finally finds happiness. He gets a job
in a fair and ethical factory, and finds love with Rachael. They start a family together and live a life
filled with joy and contentment.
In this alternative ending, the people of Coketown learn to value the importance of imagination,
creativity, and individuality. They break free from the constraints of their monotonous lives and
embrace the beauty of life. The town becomes a place of happiness and fulfillment, with the citizens
living their lives to the fullest. Hard Times serves as a reminder that while facts and figures may be
important, they are not the only things that matter in life. Emotions, imagination, and creativity are
just as important and should never be neglected.
