“Science is the use of systematic methods of investigation, theoretical thinking
and the logical assessment of arguments, to develop a body of knowledge about
a particular subject matter.” "a body of systematically arranged knowledge that
shows the operation of general laws"
There is no one set or correct definition of what sociology is. Some sociologists
define sociology as the study of the structures in society, while others define it
as the study of individuals in society. Thus the focus is on certain parts of
society; a general definition therefore is ‘the study of human society and human
social behaviour’.
Against:
1. Inconsistency
Everyone is different, the same rules do not apply to everyone .
Backgrounds do not determine the way an individual must act, contrary to
popular beliefs. For example, people who grew up in slums do not necessarily
have to act “ghetto”. Science is based on facts; every aspect of science can be
proven. On the other hand, sociology is a variable discipline; it is more
subjective and assesses the personal experience and background of individuals
and societies.

2. There are no general laws of sociology. Science has developed a set of
general laws about the world for example, humans need oxygen to
breathe which is scientifically proven on the other hand, someone who
decides to steal might have made this decision due to their economical
circumstances while someone else might choose to steal due to pressure
by his peers and not necessarily out of need. Given this example, it is fair
to suggest that there is no solid foundation on which sociology stands,
one act cannot predict the other as findings are inconsistent and due to
these inconsistencies cannot give anyone a general consensus or there
cannot be one single fact or conclusion to be drawn from any
“experiments”. Naturally science helps scientists to draw a single
interpretation or denouement through their studies and experiments, the
same cannot be said but sociology. . It is not necessarily a discipline of
knowledge, but of common principles that are repetitively used to come
to a previously made conclusion that will stay the same for the
foreseeable future. This, therefore, completely contradicts the idea that
sociology is a science and thus, it cannot and is not one.
3. Sociology is useless as it has no real life applications. Sociologist have argued ,
amongst themselves for years trying to find a use for sociology, they have yet to agree
on anything! Sociology is only an aid to society as it allows individuals to better
understand others.
4. Sociology has so many subjective views and opinions, therefore you cannot directly
account for specific things, as you can do for other sciences. It is purely theoretical
For:
1. Biological factors can account for people’s behaviours. mental factors.
According to research, people from specific backgrounds act a particular
way 2. Prediction: There is a wealth of knowledge about family connections and children’s
personal lives. With sociology’s development and maturity, it will be important to
understand different principles that govern human behaviour more comprehensively and
make accurate predictions. Natural sciences can forecast natural occurrences that will
occur in the future. A sociologist can also anticipate future social conduct based on social
problems and existence.
3. Observation: Although you cannot study human beings in a laboratory, societies serve as
it’s labratory. Experiments in the lab assess the link between two variables while
controlling additional variables. The same is applied to the study of sociology by the use
of statistical analysis which is similar to the study of other established science like
astronomy because heavenly objects cannot be studied in the laboratory, yet still
astronomy is a branch of science. Thus the same could be said about sociology. As it
uses society as a laboratory.
4. Using a Scientific Methodology: Sociology conducts scientific research on its subject
topic. It attempts to analyse social connections and ascertain the relationship between
various aspects of social life. sciences have exceptions, just that social sciences have
more exceptions than the natural. different types of sciences, just because
there’s not a… Theory based. Based on evidence, which verifies
