Description Consumable material for LMD applications
PEN Glass membrane – PPS Frame membrane
For laser microdissection, special membranes mounted on a glass slide or metal frame are used to obtain
very high-quality results.
Slides with Membrane
The slides covered with a membrane with high UV absorption, which makes them particularly suitable for
cold photoablation, a procedure used for laser cutting, are called PEN (polyethylenenaphthalate)
Membrane Slides.
Applied to the top surface of the slide, the PEN membrane is glued to the edges of the slide. Therefore, a
rectangular area is created for the adhesion of the sample.
The membrane is specially coated to ensure optimal adhesion of the samples.
Careful slide handling is essential to avoid accidental membrane damage during sample preparation.
PEN Membrane Slides can be used for most LMD applications with both frozen and paraffin sections.
PEN membranes are available in two different thicknesses: 2.0 µm or 4 µm.
Slides with 4 µm PEN membrane are specifically manufactured and developed for applications with Leica
LMD systems: the membrane is more resistant than the standard 2 µm, this allows for easier section
adhesion and a lower risk of injury to the membrane during the assembly procedure and the membrane
itself is heavier and therefore easier to collect by gravity.
For applications requiring very large sections, slides with PEN 2 µm membrane of double size (52 x 76 mm,
adhesion area 39 x 45 mm) compared to the standards (26 x 76 mm, adhesion area 19 x 41 mm) are
available.

Metal frame with 4µm PPS membrane
They can be used for virtually any application. Thanks to their low level of intrinsic autofluorescence they
are used for experiments with FLUO-labeled samples.
The membrane of 4 µm thickness specifically manufactured and developed to be more resistant during the
sample preparation phases and to facilitate the collection by gravity of small samples (single cells) thanks to
the greater weight.
For applications requiring very large sections, metal frames with 4µm PPS membrane are available in
double size (52 x 76 mm, adhesion area 39 x 45 mm) compared to the standards (26 x 76 mm, adhesion
area 19 x 41 mm)
Specifications:
• temperature resistant up to 130 ° C
• suitable for microwave treatment
• resistant to xylene (15 min) and acetone (5 min)
• semi-permeable to water
• limited resistance for methanol and ethanol
• very small (<20 µm2) and large (> 4 mm2) areas can be sectioned.
It is recommended for smear preparations.
• suitable for dissection of non-adherent cells (such as blood cells, bacteria, fungi, mosses, etc.) using
a sandwich of two FrameSlides
• very low autofluorescence
• suitable for long storage periods (e.g. -80 ° C)
