The Wine Wheel & The Fantastic Five: Introduced in Wine 101 Session #2. Use these
charts and many others like them to pinpoint the aromas in wine as you taste. Reviewing the
wine wheel chart will provide you with an arsenal of descriptive words that will help develop your
tasting skills over time. Reviewing the Fantastic Five wine characteristics will help you
understand wine traits
1. Sweetness: Look for legs (drips) after you swirl your glass, more viscosity =
more drips = more sugar! Focus tasting to the tip of your tongue, if you feel
tingles it’s probably sugar!
Dry, Dryness: Lack of sugar/sweetness
2. Acidity: All grapes are inherently acidic. if you would describe your wine as tart
or zesty, or if you feel the sides of your tongue tingling you are experiencing
acidic wine.
Round, Roundness: Lack of acidity
3. Body: How the wine sits in the class, or an overall impression of the wine.
Observe how it sits in the glass, and how Results vary based on varietal, region
and vintage.
4. Alcohol: Typically 11-15%, we sense it based on the warming towards the back
of our throats. Higher alcohol is usually found in more oily and bolder wines
5. Tannin: Phenolic compounds in a wine. Create astringency, NOT to be confused
with dryness. Adds balance, structure and makes wine last longer. Ever put a
teabag on your tongue?
