I have a decent history with math throughout my career, I have taken many math
courses through the years. These courses include advanced algebra in 8th grade,
honors geometry as a freshman, algebra 2 and 3 as a sophomore, and pre-calculus
junior and senior year. I have had both good and bad teachers throughout my math
career.
Ever since I was young I was always good at math. When I was in elementary
school, I would figure out all the math on my own without paying attention to the
teachers. But as math got more sophisticated, I realized I should probably start paying
attention. Specifically when I got to advanced algebra when I was in 8 th grade, I had a
really horrible teacher who was also kind of a pedo but that’s irrelevant to this prompt. I
really struggled to understand what was going on and had to heavily rely on my mom to
help me.
After I got through algebra I went into high school and took honors geometry with
a foreign teacher who was very difficult to understand, this combined with the last years
struggle put me behind my peers in the math world. The next year I took algebra 2 and
3 with some really great teachers, they helped me actually understand the content,
because they would actually teach the information instead of just writing problems on
the board with little explanation.
Junior year is when things got really difficult, I took pre calculous with THE
WORST teacher I have ever experienced in all of my years in school. I ended up doing
very poorly in the class, which led me to retake the class again as a senior where once
again I struggled with the content because the teacher barely knew the information he
was teaching. This made it nearly impossible to get any real answers when I asked
questions. So here I am as a freshman in college taking intermediate algebra trying to
relearn basic things I haven’t done in 2 years.
