General A. Statement of Purpose (1) This manual has been reviewed and accepted by the FAA. Additionally, this manual contains data that has been approved in a manner acceptable to the FAA administrator. (2) This manual provides routine maintenance and limited repair and parts replacement procedures for the DT-1724-3(F) rolling machine. (3) These procedures support the eligibility requirements for the rolling machine maintenance program as specified in the Approved Facilities chapter of Hartzell Propeller Inc. Standard Practices Manual 202A (61-01-02). (4) Only those repairs and parts replacements specified in this manual are authorized by Hartzell Propeller Inc. (5) Contact the Product Support Department of Hartzell Propeller Inc. about any maintenance problems or to request information not included in this publication. (6) This manual is to be used by propeller repair stations with personnel who are trained and experienced with Hartzell Propeller Inc. products. (a) (7) This manual does not provide complete information for an inexperienced technician to attempt DT-1724-3(F) rolling machine maintenance without supervision. This manual is intended to be the primary source of maintenance information for the DT-1724-3(F) rolling machine. (a) Information published in Service Bulletins, Service Letters, Service Advisories, and Service Instructions may supersede information published in this manual. The reader must consult active Service Bulletins, Service Letters, Service Advisories, and Service Instructions for information that may have not yet been incorporated into the latest revision of this manual. (8) This manual makes reference to other Hartzell Propeller Inc. manuals that provide important details such as consumable materials, tooling, approved facilities, and check procedures for the DT-1724-3(F) rolling machine. (9) Where possible, this manual is written in the format specified by ATA iSpec 2200. INTRODUCTION 61-00-28 Page 3 Rev. 3 Jun/23 HARTZELL BLADE SHANK ROLLING MACHINE MAINTENANCE MANUAL 128 B. Item References (1) Item references throughout the text in this manual refer to item numbers in the Illustrated Parts List chapter of this manual. The item numbers appear in parentheses directly following the part name. Only the item base number will appear in the text of the manual. Item base numbers and the alpha variants of the base numbers will appear in the illustrated parts list. There are two reasons for the use of alpha variants: (a) A part may be superseded, replaced, or obsoleted by another part. For example, the pitch change block unit (105733) that is item 320 was superseded by the pitch change block unit (105733-1) that is item 320A. (b) An Illustrated Parts List may contain multiple configurations. Effectivity codes are used to distinguish different part numbers within the same list. For example, one configuration may use a piston (B-2419) that is item 80, yet another configuration uses a piston (104256) that is item 80A. Effectivity codes are very important in the determination of parts in a given configuration. 2. Reference Publications A. Hartzell Propeller Inc. Description A. DT-1724-3(F) Rolling Machine Principles of Operation (1) The roller portion of the unit consists of a roller head that rotates to follow the blade retention radius. (a) (2) The roller assembly uses a small, reversible motor to drive a geared wheel to which the roller head is attached. As this wheel rotates, it rotates the roller head through the required radius. (a) (3) This unit is mounted on a carriage that moves parallel to the blade centerline to extend the rolled area beyond the radius. The range of movement of the roller is controlled by a microswitch placed at each end of travel. The carriage movement is controlled automatically by an electric motor. (a) The rolling operation begins with the carriage full forward (nearest the blade butt). (b) Once the roller head has proceeded through the radius portion of the rolling process, the carriage will begin to move toward the tip of the blade, parallel to the blade centerline. (c) The roller pressure is gradually decreased to zero. (1) (4) The reduction of roller pressure is accomplished by releasing the hydraulic pressure, which is automatically controlled by a mechanical check valve installed in the air line. The carriage traverse motor controls the forward and aft movement of the carriage. (a) Start and stop action is controlled by microswitches located at the stops at either end of the carriage travel. (1) The forward switch activates the rolling action when the carriage has reached the full forward position. (2) The aft switch stops the carriage movement at the home position. Start Cycle Switch - LS-3 (700) (a) (3) Refer to Figures 1 through 3 in this chapter, and Figures 1-1 through 1-7 in the Troubleshooting chapter of this manual. The carriage (blade drive motor) switch stops the blade drive motor when the carriage moves aft. Carriage Forward Stop Switch - LS-4 (300) (not shown) (a) Stops forward movement of the carriage. (b) Provides power to the roller head drive motor. (c) Trips the contact relays, which in turn starts the blade drive motor. (d) Trips the air solenoid (130), which in turn allows pressure to be applied. Roller Motor Forward Direction Limit Switch - LS-5 (300) (under head cover) (a) Limits travel of the roller head in reverse direction. NOTE: (7) (8) Reverse direction is the direction in which the roller head moves at the beginning of the rolling cycle. Carriage Return Switch - LS-1 (830) (a) The carriage return switch is positioned on the roller support arm and is activated when the roller body makes contact, closing the switch. (b) When the switch is closed, power is provided to the carriage traverse motor, starting the carriage return. Roller Motor Aft Direction Limit Switch - LS-6 (315) (under head cover) (a) As the roller completes its arc, the roller motor aft direction switch limits and stops the travel of the roller head by cutting power to the roller head drive motor. Unit NOTE: The lubricator is located in the F.R.L. unit (1330). (1) The small setscrew on the top of the lubricator regulates the flow of oil. (2) If the lubricator is not using oil or is using too much oil, adjust as follows: (a) Disconnect the line to the flow control valve (20). (b) Actuate the air switch (130). (c) Set the oiler to dispense one drop every 20 seconds. (d) Release the water in the filter bowl. (e) Inspect the condition of both the filter and the lubrication bowls. If the bowls are cracked, damage, or show signs of deterioration, replace them in accordance with the Repair and Replace chapter of this manual. J. Set the Air and Oil Pressures (1) The air and oil pressures are regulated by the knob located on the top of the regulator in the F.R.L. unit (1330). (2) Turn the knob (clockwise to increase pressure, and counterclockwise to decrease pressure) to adjust the pressure to 1950-2000 psi on the gauge (420). K. Set the Air Switch (1) The air switch (130) is controlled by the air control arm (100) and accompanying #10-32 cap screw. (2) Set the air control (100) arm to allow air pressure to begin escaping from the air switch after the carriage has traveled 0.125 ±0.050 inch (3.18 ±1.27 mm) from the start position toward the aft position. CAUTION: (3) THE #10-32 CAP SCREW MUST CLEAR THE HOUSING OF THE AIR SWITCH (130). To adjust the air control arm (100) for more or less travel distance, loosen the cap screws that attach the control arm to the carriage (1010). NOTE: If necessary, the holes or slots in the air control arm (100) may be elongated to achieve the proper adjustment. MACHINE SETUP AND TESTING 61-00-28 Page 4-6 Rev. 3 Jun/23 HARTZELL BLADE SHANK ROLLING MACHINE MAINTENANCE MANUAL 128 L. Set the Bleed-off Time (1) With the carriage in the aft position, set the pressure bleed-off time to 60-80 seconds. (a) Manually activate the air switch (130) to build up full pressure (1950-2000 psi) on the gauge (420). (b) Release the switch and use a stop watch to observe the amount of time it takes for the gauge (420) to return to zero pressure. (c) The bleed-off time is regulated by the air flow control valve. If the bleed-off time is not within the specified range (60-80 seconds), adjust by opening the valve for less time or closing the valve for more time. 3. Machine Functional Test After Machine Components Replacement Following the replacement of certain components in accordance with Table 3-2 of the Repair and Replace chapter and reassembly of the DT-1724-3(F) rolling machine, two tests must be made to make sure that the machine is working properly; (1) an applied load measurement that measures the force being applied by the roller to the shank, and (2) the rolling of a test blank for evaluation purposes. A. Applied Load Measurement (1) Install the load cell fixture on the fixture (340). NOTE: The load cell fixture is used as a support for the load cell to rest against. CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE FIXTURE (340) IS IN THE LOCKED POSITION AND THAT THE ROLLER HEAD IS PERPENDICULAR TO THE BLADE IN THE "HOME" POSITION. (2) Using a square, line up the surface of the load cell fixture closest to the roller (1120) to be perpendicular to the base (342). (3) Loosen the "L" Gibs (780) and slide the roller head assembly back to permit room for the load cell. (4) Using a 1/4 spacer between the roller arm (1110) and pivot block (1060), slide the roller head assembly forward until the roller (1120) contacts the load cell that is positioned between the roller and load cell fixture. (5) Tighten down the "L" Gibs (780). (6) Remove the 1/4 spacer and replace it with spacer BST-2872 (1100). (7) Manually start the air switch (130) to initialize the pressure. CAUTION: (8) THE ACCURACY OF THE LOAD CELL AND PRESSURE GAUGE ARE VERY CRITICAL. Adjust the air regulator knob on the F.R.L. unit (1330) until the gauge (420) reads 1950-2000 psi, permitting a dwell time for the pressure to reach a stable value. This is an approximate starting point. MACHINE SETUP AND TESTING 61-00-28 Page 4-7 Rev. 3 Jun/23 HARTZELL BLADE SHANK ROLLING MACHINE MAINTENANCE MANUAL 128 (9) While reading the indicated force on the load cell, adjust the knob on the F.R.L.unit (1330) until the load cell reads 250 lbs-force. (a) Make a record of the pressure indicated on the gauge (420) for use in step (11)(b) of this procedure. (b) If pressure is below 1775 psi on the gauge (420) when 250 lbs-force is reached, contact Hartzell Propeller Inc. Product Support. WARNING: ADHESIVES AND SOLVENTS ARE FLAMMABLE AND TOXIC TO THE SKIN, EYES, AND RESPIRATORY TRACT. SKIN AND EYE PROTECTION ARE REQUIRED. AVOID PROLONGED CONTACT AND BREATHING OF VAPORS. USE SOLVENT RESISTANT GLOVES TO MINIMIZE SKIN CONTACT AND WEAR SAFETY GLASSES FOR EYE PROTECTION. USE IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA AWAY FROM SPARKS AND FLAME. READ AND OBSERVE ALL WARNING LABELS. (10) Using a clean soft cloth dampened with MEK CM106 or other equivalent solvent, clean the surface of the gauge (420). Refer to Figure 4-2. (a) Write the serial number of the DT-1724-3(F) rolling machine on the 100885 label. (b) Write the gauge (420) indicated air pressure on the 100885 label. (1) Refer to step (9) of this procedure for the indicated gauge pressure. (12) Keep a current Load Cell Calibration Certificate on file in the rolling machine records. (13) Repeat the procedure until the load force stabilizes. (a) New parts and possible air in the hydraulic circuit will cause readings to fluctuate. (14) Remove the load cell from the machine. (15) Remove the load cell fixture from the machine. (16) Remove the anti-rotation device from the fixture. B. Rolling the Y-shank Test Specimen NOTE: (1) Inspect the Y-shank test specimen for imperfections. (a) (2) Typically a Y-shank test specimen comes from a scrapped blade and has the shank end cut off. If the Y-shank test specimen has damage that is severe enough to cause possible damage to the machine, use a different sample. Install the spacer (1100) on the roller arm. (a) Position the spacer (1100) so the plunger (950) touches the middle of the spacer plate (860). (3) Put the Y-shank test specimen on the fixture (340). (4) Attach the Y-shank test specimen by rotating the expansion handle of the collet (310). (5) Put an indicator on the base (342), at the end of the carriage (1010), to monitor the relative position of the roller (1120) to the blade shank. (a) (6) The indicator must have a minimum travel limit of 1.25 inches (31.8 mm). Monitor the setting of the air control arm (100). This setting controls the distance that full pressure is applied after the roller (1120) passes the tangent point of the radius, after the carriage (1010) starts to move. (a) Monitor the distance that the carriage (1010) moves before the air pressure begins to be released by the air switch (130). (1) The carriage (1010) movement distance must be 0.125 ±0.050 inch (3.18 ±1.27 mm). (2) The carriage (1010) movement is controlled by adjusting the air control arm (100). Refer to section 2.K. in this chapter. MACHINE SETUP AND TESTING 61-00-28 Page 4-9 Rev. 3 Jun/23 HARTZELL BLADE SHANK ROLLING MACHINE MAINTENANCE MANUAL 128 (7) Monitor the pressure transition zone. CAUTION: (a) (8) Measure the distance that the carriage (1010) travels from when the pressure starts to release until the pressure is zero. (1) The distance must be a minimum of 0.220 inch (5.59 mm). (2) The carriage (1010) movement is controlled by adjusting the bleed-off time. Refer to section 2.L. in this chapter. Attach the air supply to the F.R.L. unit (1330). (a) (9) MAKE SURE THE PRESSURE HAS BLED TO ZERO BEFORE THE BLADE HAS STOPPED TURNING. The incoming supply must be 100-120 psi. When the adjustments are complete, run a preliminary trial with no air supply. (10) Turn on the main power switch (690). (11) Actuate the start cycle switch (700). 0.570 inch (14.48 mm) Maximum Critical Area rolled at full pressure 0.540 ±0.075 0.220 Inch inch (13.72 ±1.91 (5.59 mm) mm) Min. Evaluation of Test Specimen A. Required Component Checks After Replacement (1) Following the replacement of any of the components listed in Table 3-2 of the Repair and Replace chapter in this manual, perform the following checks: (a) Before beginning the rolling process, examine the contour of the retention radius on the optical comparator, using a mylar overlay. Refer to Appendix A - Optical Comparator chapter in the Hartzell Propeller Inc. Aluminum Blade Overhaul Manual 133C (61-13-33). NOTE: The radius of the sample must conform to the optical comparator overlay. If the radius does not conform to the optical comparator overlay, use a different sample. (b) After the rolling process is completed, using a profilometer TE436 measure the surface finish of the rolled radius and transition area of the blade shank in accordance with the Overhaul Procedures section in the Blade Shank Overhaul chapter of Hartzell Propeller Inc. Aluminum Blade Overhaul Manual 133C (61-13-33). (c) After the rolling process is completed, reinspect the blade shank on the optical comparator to make sure the rolling process did not change the shape or contour of the radius. (d) If the shape or contour of the radius was changed by the rolling process, refer to the section, "Failure of Test Roll Specimen" in this chapter. (e) The surface of the radius and shank must meet the dimensional requirements and must meet or exceed the surface finish requirements as shown in Figure 4-3. (f) Examples of unacceptable surface conditions are indents, pits, ridges, or abrupt transitions. Unacceptable conditions must be polished out in accordance with the limits as shown in Figure 4-3, and the blade retention radius must be re-rolled. Introduction A. General (1) The Illustrated Parts List contains the current configurations for the DT-1724-3(F) rolling machines manufactured by Hartzell Propeller Inc. included in this manual and supersedes any prints that may have previously been supplied for part and assembly information. The parts list contained within the Illustrated Parts List is to be used to make sure of the configuration of the DT-1724-3(F) rolling machines and for ordering parts. CAUTION: (2) ILLUSTRATIONS IN THE ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST ARE TO BE USED FOR IDENTIFYING PARTS AND SHOULD NOT BE USED AS A MAINTENANCE REFERENCE FOR ASSEMBLY. Figures are for reference only. The figures provide general views of parts. For ease of illustration, typical views of some parts were created and shown in multiple figures. For this reason, illustrated parts may not exactly reflect parts contained in some DT-1724-3(F) rolling machines. B. Using the Illustrated Parts List (1) If a repair station has questions about the DT-1724-3(F) rolling machines as stated in the Illustrated Parts List, contact the Hartzell Propeller Inc. Product Support Department. 2. Description of Columns (Rev. 1) A. Fig/Item Number (1) Figure Number refers to the illustration where items appear. Item Numbers refer to the specific part callout in the applicable illustration. (a) Item Numbers that are listed but not shown in the illustration are identified by a dash to the left of the item number. (example: "-800") (b) Alpha variants will be used to add additional items. There are two reasons for the use of alpha variants: 1 A part may have an alternate, or may be superseded, replaced, or obsoleted by another part. a 2 For example, the self-locking nut (A-2043) that is item 20 was superseded by the self-locking nut (A-2043-1) that is item 20A. An Illustrated Parts List may contain multiple configurations. Effectivity codes are used to distinguish different part numbers within the same list. a For example, one propeller configuration may use a mounting bolt (B-3339-1) that is item 30, yet another propeller configuration uses a mounting bolt (B-3347) that is item 30A. Effectivity codes are very important in the determination of parts in a given configuration. ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST 61-00-28 Page 6-3 Rev. 3 Jun/23 HARTZELL BLADE SHANK ROLLING MACHINE MAINTENANCE MANUAL 128 B. Part Number (1) The Part Number is the Hartzell Propeller Inc. identification number for the part. (2) Use the Hartzell Propeller Inc. part number when ordering the part from Hartzell or a Hartzell-approved distributor. C. Part Replacement Code (1) The part replacement codes indicate the following: (a) (b) NCR - No Check Required. 1 The components that have this code may be directly replaced when required. 2 A component that has this code does not effect the setup of the machine and, therefore, does not require setup tests, checks, and/or calibration procedures to be performed after it is replaced. SCR - Setup and Check Required. 1 A component that has this code may be replaced in the field; however, it may affect the original setup of the machine. a (c) If one of these components is replaced, the appropriate setup tests and/or check procedures must be performed in accordance with the Machine Setup and Testing chapter of this manual before additional blade shanks are rolled. HPI - Hartzell Propeller Inc. only. 1 A component that has this code may be replaced only by Hartzell Propeller Inc. a If replacement of one of these components is necessary, the entire rolling machine must be returned to Hartzell Propeller Inc. for repair. ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST 61-00-28 Page 6-4 Rev. 3 Jun/23 HARTZELL BLADE SHANK ROLLING MACHINE MAINTENANCE MANUAL 128 D. Description (1) This column provides the Hartzell Propeller Inc. description of the part. (2) Bullets and indentations are used to indicate parts that are components of a sub-assembly. (a) For example, a Fork Assembly that is part of a HC-C2YR-1 propeller assembly will have one bullet ( • ) before the description. This indicates that the Fork Assembly is part of the propeller assembly. 1 A Fork Bumper that is part of the Fork Assembly will appear directly below the Fork Assembly with two bullets ( • • ) before the description. This indicates that the Fork Bumper is part of the Fork Assembly - that is part of the Propeller Assembly. a Example: HC-C2YR-1 • Fork Assembly • • Fork Bumper (3) If the description in this column includes a "PCP:" prefix, the part is classified as a Propeller Critical Part. (4) If applicable, information regarding part alternatives, supersedures, replacements, or obsolescence will appear in the Description column. (5) (a) Refer to the section, "Description of Terms" in this chapter for definitions and requirements for part "alternates", "supersedures", etc. (b) When part alternatives, supersedures, replacements, etc. are listed, the service document number related to the change may be included for reference. If applicable, vendor CAGE codes will be listed in the Description column. E. Effectivity Code (EFF CODE) (1) (2) This column is used when additional information about a part is required. (a) Effectivity codes can be used to identify parts that are only used on a particular model, or to direct the user to additional information in the "Effectivity" box at the bottom of the page. (b) Whenever an effectivity code is present, refer to the "Effectivity" box at the bottom of the page for the applicable information. Parts common to all assembly models on the page show no effectivity code. ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST 61-00-28 Page 6-5 Rev. 3 Jun/23 HARTZELL BLADE SHANK ROLLING MACHINE MAINTENANCE MANUAL 128 F. Procurement Source (1) This column identifies the approved source for procurement of the part. (a) HPI - Hartzell Propeller Inc. A component that has this code can be purchased from Hartzell Propeller Inc. only. (b) M - Manufactured component - A component that has this code is not available for purchase, but must be locally manufactured. Contact Hartzell Propeller Inc. for the current print. (c) NA - Not Applicable - A component that has this code is not approved by Hartzell Propeller Inc. for replacement in the field. (d) OBS - Obsolete - A component that has this code is obsolete and no longer used in the DT-1724-3F rolling machine assemblies. (e) V - Vendor - A component that has this code may be purchased from a vendor other than Hartzell Propeller Inc. Some of these components can also be available for purchase from Hartzell Propeller Inc. G. Units Per Assembly (UPA) (1) Designates the total quantity of an item required for the next higher assembly or subassembly. 3. Description of Terms (Rev. 1) A. Alternate (1) Alternate parts are identified by the term "ALTERNATE" in the Description column. Alternate items are considered airworthy for continued flight and existing stock of parts may be used for maintenance and/or repair. The new or alternate part number may be used interchangeably when ordering/stocking new parts. B. Supersedure (1) Part changes are identified by the terms “SUPERSEDES ITEM _____” or “SUPERSEDED BY ITEM _____” in the Description column. Superseded items are considered airworthy for continued flight and existing stock of superseded parts may be used for maintenance and/or repair. Once the superseding part has been incorporated/installed into an assembly, the original superseded part may no longer be used. Superseded parts may no longer be available, and the new part number must be used when ordering/stocking new parts. C. Replacement (1) Part changes identified by the terms "REPLACES ITEM _____” or “REPLACED BY ITEM _____” in the Description column are considered airworthy for continued flight, but must be replaced with a part with the new part number at overhaul. Existing stock of replaced parts may not be used for maintenance and/or repair of effected assemblies. Replaced parts may no longer be available, and the new part number must be used when ordering/stocking new parts.
