ENC 1101
One particular writing situation I've engaged in was my college application essay. This was a
very important writing to me and I took it very seriously as it would play a big part in my future
plans. In this situation I was writing to a plethora of colleges, talking about my life story and how
I want to attend their university. Even though I was slightly nervous, I felt very comfortable in
my writing. I communicated effectively by putting my writing in an organized format.
A second example of a writing situation I've engaged in was my personal statement for a job
application. This particular job was at a local coffee shop, so I decided to describe my enjoyment
for making drinks as well as my love of coffee. I then went on to talk about my prior experience
working at other coffee shops and how that would make me a good candidate for the job. In this
situation, I am writing especially to the hiring manager, as he is in charge. I felt super confident
in this writing as I made sure it was correctly formatted.
A third example of a writing situation I've engaged in is an email to a professor to ask for extra
credit on my semester grade. This is a tricky one, as it normally doesn't work. I decided to start
my email by asking the teacher how she was, following with the question I wanted to ask. I
honestly didn't feel very confident, but I believed it was worth a try. I communicated efficacy by
listing specific reasons why I should be allowed extra credit, as well as thanking the teacher
multiple times.
In Hensel's writing, the audience is likely general readers and people looking to be educated.
Specifically, the goal of Hensel’s article is to examine how written text punctuation can be used
to imply passive aggression or other types of concealed emotional mess. The main genre seems
to be for a piece of blog, as It is very accessible. He is writing in an environment where there is
more emphasis on the use of digital media for communication.
In Amy Tan's writing, the main goal seems to be to raise awareness and discuss language builds
identity and to answer the question of how language itself affects people who use different
‘broken’ English. This would lead in to the main audience, which is most likely people who are
interested in language, culture, and personal identity. This writing is a personal essay, as Tan uses
personal reflection to discuss themes relating to identity and culture. She writes from her
personal experience as an immigrant and her essay offers personal perspectives on language and
on personal and social uses of language.
