The Essense of Faith Through Human Action
Based on the readings discussed, faith is a human action integral to the human
experience. However, in the most basic sense, faith is nothing more than speculation. When you
say you take something on faith, you just say you believe it’s true. However, it is worth noting
that this notion is not necessarily as bad as it sounds.
To put this into perspective, say you have faith that evolution occurred in the past the
same way it does now, or you have faith that the early stages of universe expansion were
consistent with our current theories. Logically speaking, there is no way to prove these things
empirically with our current technology, so even though it may seem logically factual, there must
be an element of faith in the unseen and untested. This is not faith without logic or reason – just
as equally as believing in the Christian God is also not faith without logic and reason. Faith is
simply the starting point of action. Then, under further investigation, once faith has given you
grounds to investigate further, the truth is revealed.
The reading states that faith is a dynamic commitment to human freedom in action. In the
Hebrew-Jewish Context, one common denominator throughout history is that faith is defined as
belief with strong conviction through transformative action, a "firm belief in a phenomenon for
which there may be no tangible proof." It is complete trust, confidence, reliance, or devotion;
faith is the antithesis of doubt. It is not the same as truth. However, as a starting point, it may
give motivation to do the research and eventually have faith replaced by truth. Even finding the

facts that tell you the faith was misguided. The trick is simply not to let faith get in the way of
facts. And let faith be the start of the journey, not the end.
