Organic Chemistry assignment
Teflon
Teflon, in other name Poly1,1,2,2,tetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is commonly synthesised
by a free-radical chain growth polymerization from tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) (Vedantu,
2024). By an emulsion polymerization process can the powdered form be synthesised
(Jamil, 2022), and grains of PFTE can be synthesised by Suspension polymerization
(TechnoAD, 2019).
Teflon is a homopolymer with the chemical formula (C2F4)n and is also a thermoplastic
polymer. As its properties, it is a white solid compound in room temperature, the density
is about 2200 kg/m3, melting point is 600k. It is a chemical resistance compound, where
alkali metals are the only chemicals that can affect the compounds. Shows good
resistance towards heat around 194k, and low temperature at 5k. Has a low water
absorption ability capacity (Vedantu, 2024).
Teflon can be used to make waterproof fabric, non-stick cookware, anti-friction devices
and coating medical appliances (surgical devices) (Vedantu, 2024).
