Shaw at first did not want to lead the colored regime at first
At first others thought he was much too brutal and mean to his
soldiers. Some called him a racist.
He is loyal at the end and brave at the end of the movie when
he dies with his troops into battle.
For this incident, he was publicly flogged in front of the whole
battalion, and which brought a great humiliation to him.
He is quite hard-headed, too, though he is a super-hard worker.
He was always looking for a fight in the early parts of the film;
this changed after he met with Major Rawlins. It is because he
changed heart that he referred to the regime as his "family."
Full of wisdom and reflective, he lets the young ones handle
temptations even better.
He always sees everything in a positive way and in the end
keeps his identity pride in himself.
He fought all through to the end of the movie to have a say for
his people, his family, and for freedom.
Forbes remained loyal to Shaw and Shaw's army.
Forbes felt pity, which was depicted through various means, and
confronted Colonel Shaw for maltreating his soldiers from time
to time.
He was loyal to his men to the very end of the fight-even when
Shaw was down, he took over the lead and moved the men
further into Fort.
He was a cultivated negro, and spoke in a thoughtful and
considerate manner.
He is proud of serving his country, though he doesn't show
much of a performer in a fight.
Once shy, now brave, in that first battle, it was a question of
honor as he covered the soldiers and saved the life of Tripps.
Lying down, hurt, from a shot, he asked to continue fighting,
declaring that he would give everything to the 54th.
A religious man, an excellent marksman with the musket.
He became a bit more reserved at first and didn't read that well,
but he learned more and more. Since he read the Bible until the

54th before the battle, he brought hope and inspiration.
Sharts is hopeful, for he has much faith in the Lord and bringing
others up when they are down.
He is higher up than Shaw in terms of power.
He can be thought of as a racist and is disrespectful to the Black
Soldiers when we see him simply shoot one of them during their
first battle.
He has absolutely no pity, as we see through the way in which
he speaks to and handles the Black soldiers on the front line.
Mulcahy was the Sergeant leading the 54th through their
training exercise.
He may be adjudged to be tough and cruel to the soldiers,
whereas whatever he does he does for their good because he
wants to see them performing brilliantly in the battlefield.
He thinks they are equal to a white man regime and that they
can do better, which one sees in the scenes when he was training
the soldiers.
