Selecting a Research Topic
Selecting a good topic for a research project can be challenging.
Your topic must be specific enough for you to be able to find
enough – but not too many – sources of information, and it must be
broad enough for you to find a good diversity of sources. Consider
the following examples:
TOO BROAD:
The impact of movies on society.
TOO NARROW: The impact of Yoda’s philosophy in The
Empire Strikes Back on society.
JUST RIGHT:
The impact of the Star Wars movies on boys who
grew up in the 1970s.
In this exercise, you will practice narrowing down a broad topic. You
will not actually be writing a paper; the goal is to practice working
from a general topic to one that is specific, but not too narrow.
DIRECTIONS: Read each topic below. If necessary, conduct some
preliminary research on the topic. Then narrow down each one into
a specific and viable research topic.
1. People should eat healthy food.
2. Work doesn’t have to be done in an office.
3. Pets are good for people.
