A Christmas Carol (2009) Starring Jim Carrey
Plot Summary
A Christmas Carol tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly, bitter old man who despises
Christmas and everything associated with it. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of
his former business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley, weighed down by chains representing his selfish
life choices, warns Scrooge that he must change his ways to avoid the same fate. Following this,
three spirits visit Scrooge during the night.
The Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge back in time to revisit key moments in his life. He
witnesses his lonely childhood, the loss of his first love due to his obsession with money, and the
joy he once found in simpler times. These memories evoke deep regret in Scrooge.
The Ghost of Christmas Present reveals the current Christmas celebrations of others, focusing on
the joy and struggles of families such as the Cratchits. Scrooge sees the love and perseverance of
Bob Cratchit and his family despite their poverty, particularly Tiny Tim, who is gravely ill but
remains hopeful and kind-hearted.
Finally, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows Scrooge a grim future, including his own lonely
death and the indifference of those around him. He sees the impact his selfishness has had on
others and the sadness of the Cratchits upon Tiny Tim’s death.
By Christmas morning, Scrooge wakes up a changed man. He embraces the spirit of Christmas,
becoming generous, compassionate, and joyful. He donates to the poor, helps the Cratchits, and
reconnects with his family.

Through visits to Scrooge’s childhood and young adulthood, the spirit helps Scrooge confront
the moments that led to his bitterness.

community and generosity. Scrooge’s visit to the Cratchits and his realization of their struggles

consequences. The scenes of Scrooge’s neglected grave and Tiny Tim’s death are pivotal in his
