Nomenclature
TOPIC 1
What is it?
Another name for:
HALOGENOALKANES - More traditional style naming
ALKYL HALIDE - Common name used in the U.S.
Haloalkanes are the hydrocarbons in which
one or more hydrogen atoms have been
replaced with halogen atoms.
TOPIC 1
Who found it?
There are no specific founder of the Haloalkane
but notably,
Chemist Victor Grignard is notable for
discovering the reaction that uses haloalkanes to
form Grignard reagents in 1900, which was a
significant development in organometallic
chemistry
TOPIC 2
Functional Group
Where X = halogen atom (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine).
So the functional group is a halogen atom covalently bonded
to a saturated carbon atom (sp³ hybridized carbon) of an
alkane chain.
TOPIC 3
Uses
Haloalkanes (Choloform) was historically
used as an anesthetic in surgery!
Early fire extinguishers uses Carbon
Tetrachloride because it releases noninflammable vapors.
Used for medicines: Halogenated antibiotics
and anesthetics.
Haloalkanes are also raw materials for
making plastics like PVC (Ch2=ChCi)
