WHAT
IS
ESPORT?
Esports, or electronic sports, refers to the
world of competitive video gaming where
individuals or teams compete in organized
tournaments. Esports encompasses a wide
variety of game genres.
Small local tournaments were held in the 1970s and various
national arcade gaming competitions were held in many
countries in the 1980s.
HISTORY
OF
ESPORTS
1990s was the growth period for esports, different countries
started holding large esports tournaments during the year
1990-1999.
Number of tournaments held worldwide went from 10 (in 2000) to
260 (in 2010). Esports grew tremendously in 2010s as many large
tournaments such as The International, Wii Games Summer 2010
and many more were held during that period.
Esports was recognized as an official sports discipline in 2017. The
International Olympic Committee held Olympic Virtual Series
(OVS) in 2022. In 2024, the first ever world cup tournament of
esports, Esports World Cup 2024 was held in Saudi Arabia.

CONCLUSION
Esports has been rapidly gaining popularity around the world and it
will become much more famous in the future due to the
advancements in technology and the growing accessibility of
high-speed internet. But compared to other countries, Bangladesh
is still lacking behind in this particular category of sport. If the
esports players of Bangladesh get the proper acknowledgement
they deserve and enough sponsorship, they’d be able to compete
with players from other countries on international level.
