1. I would like you to know that I am an individual who is organized and excited for my
college classes. My family supports me in my interests and motivates me to study hard. I
like to have a lot of things on my plate involving academics and extracurricular activities
as it keeps me busy and challenged. Some of my hobbies include reading, travelling,
spending time with family and friends, baking, and singing.
2. I hope to learn more about how to be successful in college classes by using the study
techniques mentioned in the textbook readings.
3. My top goal this semester is to be on top of my school work and work on things early by
utilizing proper time management and study skills.
4. Some internal roadblocks could involve me not feeling prepared for the content or not
feeling as smart as other students. An external roadblock could be all my other
commitments as it may take away from the time I have to study or succeed in my classes.
5. One strength I have is that I am extremely organized, so I plan on using an online planner
and my Google Calendar to track my progress and ensure that I do not miss deadlines as I
work toward my goal. Another strength I have is being disciplined. I think that focusing
on my goal and remembering what I am trying to accomplish will help me tackle
roadblocks.

I am motivated by myself and my strong desire to succeed in my classes and academic
activities. I am always working to ensure that I get the best grade possible and try to
participate in many extracurricular activities to strengthen my skills and resume. I think my
strengths of being extremely organized and detail oriented will be the most useful for me to
succeed academically. Five years from now, I hope to be working at NASA with my dream
job of being an aerospace engineer. Taking the FOCUS 2 assessments made me confirm
that I am someone who pays attention to details. Some career suggestions that have been
surprising are an agricultural inspector and agricultural technician as I do not find
agriculture an interesting field. I researched the career of an aerospace engineering
technician and a detail about this career that appeals to me is working with technical
equipment and conducting data analysis by testing the equipment. One thing that surprised
me is the large amount of teamwork and collaboration needed for this career.
1. Respond to the following questions:
How do you prioritize your college, personal and/or professional responsibilities?
Which of your strengths do you think will be most useful for you in succeeding
academically?
What obstacles may get in the way of your coursework and how can you use your strengths
to overcome them?
What learning habits recommended in the this module's reading and video do you want to
develop or improve?
What specific steps will you take to start working on them?
I prioritize my college, personal, and professional responsibilities by making sure that I am
extremely organized. I have multiple planners and write everything down on my Google
Calendar to ensure that I do not forget anything. I think my strength of being a
perfectionist and being detailed will be the most useful in me succeeding academically. As
I am a perfectionist, I am always trying to get the best grade possible which is why I study
a lot to make sure that I am satisfied. Some obstacles that may get in the way of my
coursework are my extracurricular activities. I am in many clubs and design teams which
take up a lot of my time as I have to attend a lot of meetings. I can use my strengths to
overcome these obstacles by using my time management skills and attention to detail to
recognize which tasks need more time. Some learning habits I want to develop or improve
include using more active recall. I feel like my courses include a lot of textbook readings
so I need to make sure that I apply what I learn from the readings by doing many practice
problems. One step I will take to start working on this learning habit is to ask an AI
software to give me practice problems and questions similar to homework problems that I
am stuck on.
Some strategies that I would suggest for Monica to deal with her test anxiety include practicing
relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or meditation before and during the
test. I think this will make Monica feel calmer. I would also suggest for Monica to eat a balanced
meal before the exam so that she has enough energy to take the exam while also maintaining her
concentration. Some study strategies that Monica could try to better prepare for her exams
include using spaced repetition instead of cramming for the exam the night before. I feel like
Monica will retain a lot more information if she learns it over a longer period of time. Monica
can also take practice tests in a quiet environment so that she can use active recall to prepare for
the test. I usually prepare for exams by reviewing all my notes and doing practice problems. I
combat test anxiety by taking deep breaths and remembering that I am ready to take the test.
Some strategies I might now consider using in preparing for exams is using more active recall.
Since I have classes where we take a lot of notes, I think that doing a lot of practice will help me
the most. The strategies might relate to my preferred learning preference because I like to learn
by actually doing. Although learning by reading notes may seem helpful, I think the only way to
apply it is by doing practice problems or other forms of active recall.
I learned that there are many different approaches to learning something and different people
have different preferences. The VARK theory resonated with me more because I feel like it is
very simple and straightforward. I think that using the acronym through the name of the theory is
also helpful since each letter stands for a meaningful part of the theory. I took the assessments
via the links provided in the PDF. Based on what I learned, I want to give more attention to the
visual and auditory aspects of learning as I realized I learn best through text and also listening to
something. I will adjust my study habits to improve my studying efficiency by drawing mind
maps of important test concepts as a mind map will ensure that I get the important visual cues. I
can also listen to a podcast of someone explaining the topic because I feel like listening to the
information will be extremely helpful for me.
