HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY
-
-
Important date: 1879
Started with Wilhelm Wundt’s first psychological laboratory and his concept of
introspection (structuralism)
Then William James wrote the principles of psychology and discussed
functionalism
Philosophy and physiology contribute to psychology. Physiology provided the
human consciousness and scientific method to study human consciousness.
Consciousness (experience in the very present moment, thoughts you are
having, sensory, emotional state, center of focus)
Introspection
William James (functionalist) argued that they should focus on the function and
purpose of taste (Hershey’s kisses example)
Structuralists: breaking down components, want you to say and explain whats
happening to u further specific (My stomach is churning, aching, sweating,
muscles feel weak) not feeling fear. Braking experience into elemental
components: what, functionalists: wants you to say the PURPOSE AND
FUNCTION OF fear or what you feel (if you don’t have fear you would die, you
wouldn’t know what danger is, to inform you what you need to do to be safe)
Porcupine in the Woods example.
7 MAJOR PERSPECTIVES OF MODERN PSYCHOLOGY
