Henry VIII: Problems and Solutions
Problems:
- Need for a Male Heir
Wife (Catherine of Aragon) only had a daughter (Mary). Pope refused a divorce.
- Conflict with the Pope
Wanted control over the Church in England. Disliked the Pope's authority.
- Lack of Money
Wars in Europe were costly. Needed wealth for royal lifestyle and prestige.
- Opposition to His Rule
Some people, including church leaders, opposed his policies.
Solutions:
- Became Supreme Head of the Church (1534)
Passed the Act of Supremacy, removing the Pope's authority in England.
- Got a New Wife (Anne Boleyn)
Since he controlled the Church, he granted himself a divorce and married Anne Boleyn in 1533.
- Eliminated Opposition
Executed those who resisted, including Sir Thomas More and Bishop Fisher.
- Dissolved the Monasteries (1536-1539)
Shut down monasteries, seized wealth, and sold lands to raise funds.
