FOLLOW THE COLREGS
Check the passage plan and be aware of hazards that can be expected during your watch
Follow the passage plan
Monitor the vessels position throughout
Plot vessel’s position at regular intervals, increase the frequency as yacht approaches
hazards
Be aware of possible drift and leeway & make allowances as needed to maintain track.
o Note that currents can be unexpectedly extreme in inshore waters.
Cross check GPS position with other position fixing methods
Monitor under keel clearance & cross check with charts when crossing contours
Monitor GMDSS equipment and comply with VTS reporting requirements
Ensure the correct lights and shapes are displayed as and when required
Maintain a good situational awareness. Do not allow yourself to be distracted
Maintain a good all-round lookout (RULE 5) – By ALL means, ALL the time
Take early and positive action to avoid a collision (Rule 8)
Ensure CPAs are adequate and as per Captain Standin Orders in the CO logbook
Monitor other vessels until well past and clear
Engine control is always available. Slow down or stop if necessary. Warn the duty engineer
of engine movements if possible
Be aware of autopilot settings and limitations
If required, engage hand steering in ample time.
Maintain a good general awareness of onboard activities
Ensure vessel’s security is maintained
Record all events in the deck logbook
Make sure to do a full handover to the next watchkeeper. Make entry into C/O log book
Call the captain if following occurs:

If you are in doubt about anything
Visibility drops below 2 miles or weather deteriorates unexpectedly
Another vessel causes you concern or you must deviate from the passage plan by a
significant margin
If you feel you are becoming overloaded with a situation
As per specific standing orders written in the deck logbook
If you start to think “SHOULD I CALL THE CAPTAIN” – this is the time to do it
Information
The recommended Sea settings for the stabilisers are following and should be followed if possible:
- In all sea conditions choose the “Adaptive” setting, except for the below situation.
- In following seas chose “Active” settings with the below parameters
Angle 30, Velocity 70, Acceleration 25 and heel as required.
