CHAPTER I
RATIONALE
Sleep is a complex process that we all experience every day. It is a big part in
daily life of students, especially in learning and personal development. Without proper
sleep we cannot function properly and the risk of several different health problems
increases. Learning becomes challenging and we become forgetful. Thousands of
students around the globe are at risk of sleep deprivation which contributes to lower
academic outcomes and furthermore to problems at work place. Self-development
means improving in different parts of your life, like school performance, emotional
health, and social skills. For students, getting enough sleep helps them focus better,
remember what they learned, and stay in a good mood. This makes it easier to talk to
people and deal with stress. But if you don’t sleep enough or stay up too late, it can
make these things harder to do.
According to the National Sleep Foundation (2020), teenagers need around 8-10
hours of sleep to function well and be mentally healthy. Sleep deprivation can lead to
difficulty concentrating, increased stress, and even a higher risk of mental health issues
like anxiety or depression.
This study aims to assess the impacts of sleep habits towards the selfdevelopment of Senior High School students of St. Anthony College of Roxas City. By
assessing the sleep habits of Senior High School students, this study will highlight on

how sleep habits affect their academic performance, behavior, and overall growth and
to understand how students’ sleep habits can influence their self-development.

METHODOLOGY
Research Design
This is a descriptive study that aims to determine the impact of sleeping
habits towards the self-development of Senior High School students at St. Anthony
College of Roxas City, Inc. According to American Psychology Association (APA),
descriptive research is a type of research that aims to describe the characteristics,
behaviors, or attitudes of a particular group of people, such as a sample of students or
employees. It involves the collection of data in order to test hypotheses or to answer
questions concerning the status of the subjects under study.
This research study will employ a correlational research design.
Correlational research design aims to identify and quantify the relationship between two
or more variables without manipulating. This method is particularly useful for
examining the degree to which the variables are related, which can provide insights into
the nature and strength of these relationships (Creswell, 2014). In this study, the primary
focus is on understanding the impact of sleeping habits among Senior High School
students. By collecting and analyzing numerical data from a representative sample,
researchers can determine whether a significant correlation exist between the sleeping
habits and self-development of Senior high School students. This approach allows for
the examination of variables in their natural settings, thereby providing insights into
how the impacts of sleep habits implementation outcomes.

Population Frame and Sampling Technique
The population of this quantitative research will revolve around the Senior High
School students (SHS) of St. Anthony College of Roxas City. The senior high school
students usually cover the final two years of secondary education, serving students
typically between the ages ranging from 16 to 18. The researchers will employ a
probability sampling technique which is simple random sampling. This method ensures
that each Senior High School student in the target population has an equal probability
of being selected. This approach minimizes selection bias, a common threat to internal
validity.
Slovin’s formula will be used to calculate the minimum sample sized needed
to estimate a statistic based on an acceptable margin of error. According to Kothari, C.
R., Slovin’s formula is a convenient method for calculating sample size when the
population is large, it allows researchers to effectively manage their resources while
ensuring sufficient data collection. Because of this, the researchers will use the Slovin’s
formula to calculate an appropriate sample size from a population. The target population
is 173 senior high school students at St. Anthony College of Roxas City, Inc.
Employing the slovin’s formula, 123 was determined as a sample size with
(5%) five percent (e) margin error. To determine the sample population of respondents
from the population, the population of each section is divided to the total population and
multiplied to 122

Theoretical Framework
Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) states that selfdevelopment is driven by motivation, competence and autonomy. When the needs are
met, individuals are more motivated, perform better academically and experience
personal growth. In the study of Gireesh, Shanbhag and Jose (2018) entitled
“Association of Sleep Quality and Academic Performance among students” examined
the relationship between sleep patterns and academic motivation in adolescents. Their
findings suggest that students with sufficient sleep demonstrate better self-regulation,

decision-making, and time management, allowing them to take control of their academic
responsibilities and personal growth. In contrast, those with poor sleep habits struggle
with focus and self-discipline, limiting their ability to make sound decisions regarding
their studies and daily activities.

the Sleep Habits, while the dependent variable is the Self-Development. The
demographic profile of the senior high students is the independent variable that is
manipulated by the researcher, and the Sleeping Habits and Self Development is the
variable that is being measured as a result of the changes made to this independent
variable.

Related Literatures
An article by Frontiers entitled “Sleep, Well-Being and Academic
Performance: A Study in a Singapore Residential College” (M. A, Armand, F. Biassoni,
A. Corrias, 2021) examined the relationship between sleep quality, well-being and
academic performance among undergraduate students. Using tools like the Pittsburgh
Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and self-reported GPA, the study found that poor sleep
quality and daytime dysfunction significantly impacted academic performance and
emotional well-being. It revealed that better sleep habits were associated with improved
positive emotions and reduced negative experiences, both of which are critical for
students’ self-development. Interestingly, the study identified nonlinear relationships,
showing that while good mental health often supports better sleep, high academic
achievers do not always report optimal sleep quality. The findings of this study show
the importance of promoting healthy sleep habits to enhance not only academic success
but also emotional resilience and overall well-being, which can contribute for personal
growth and development.
A study entitled “The effect of Sleep Quality on Students’ Academic
Achievement (R. Jalali, H. Khazaei, B. K. Paveh, Z. Hayrani, L. Menati, 2020)
determine the relationship between sleep quality and students’ academic achievement
among students as Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences. Using the Pittsburgh
Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the results indicated that there is no significant difference
between students with high grades and those with low grades. However, the result also

showed that insufficient or irregular sleep patterns are linked to severe drowsiness and
poor academic success. It underscores the necessity for students to maintain proper sleep
schedules to enhance their learning capabilities and overall academic performance.
The study entitled “The Impact of Sleep Patterns on Academic Performance
and Social Integration among Medical Students” (Găgilă, L., Cojocaru, T., Pînzariu, G.,
Sauciuc, D., Lupașcu, D., Sauciuc, L., Ursachianu, I. and Cojocaru, E. (2024) assess
how sleep issues affect academic achievements and social relationships among medical
students. The findings shows that there is a significant correlation between sleep quality
and academic performance, with students reporting better sleep hygiene achieving
higher grades, also the results indicated that poor sleep negatively impacts social
interactions, leading to feelings of isolation and reduced social participation. It
highlights the importance of promoting good sleep practices in medical schools to
enhance academic success and social well-being. It also noted that poor sleep negatively
affects social interactions, leading to feelings of isolation, which can impact selfdevelopment.
