LAB POLICIES
The First Year Engineering Learning & Innovation Center (FYELIC) is available to support the
courses offered by The College of Engineering’s First Year Engineering Program. Faculty, staff,
and student workers in FYELIC are available to assist you in your academic pursuit. However,
their use is based upon availability, and at times, may require students to wait. Access to FYELIC
and equipment is a privilege that can be revoked at any time. Inappropriate or dangerous
activities may result in a removal from the center, a ban on access to the facilities, disciplinary
actions and/or referral to the Northeastern University Police Department or OSCCR.
CODE OF CONDUCT
Behavior that infringes upon the rights of others is prohibited. FYELIC is considered an
academic space and, as such, any actions or behaviors that would be considered
inappropriate in a classroom would also be inappropriate in FYELIC. Prohibited activities and
behaviors include, but are not limited to, the following:
● Exhibiting any threatening or intimidating behaviors, e.g., abusive language, threats of
violence, or sexual harassment
● Engaging in behavior that is potentially unsafe or harmful to self, others, or
equipment
● Use of alcohol, tobacco, or controlled substances. Including the use of e-cigarettes or
vapes
● Obstructing the use of equipment or facilities or denying access to tools by failing to
return tools not being used, theft, or deliberate misplacement
● Removing any equipment or tools from FYELIC
● Defacing or damaging tools, equipment, or furniture
● Leaving FYELIC without cleaning your work area and returning equipment to the
proper locations
● Leaving personal belongings or projects unsecured in FYELIC
● Unauthorized use of lab machines or equipment
SAFETY
Before working in FYELIC, you must complete the “Shop Safety Training” offered by
Environmental Health and Safety (access via northeastern.bioraft.com). Students may request
help and instruction in the use of a tool from faculty, lab staff, or student workers. Students
using tools inappropriately may be asked to leave the facilities. In the makerspace, everyone
is required to abide by rules:
● Wear safety glasses at all times in the makerspace
● Wear closed toed shoes
● Do not disturb others with strong odors
● Do not use paint, isopropyl alcohol, aerosols, or other volatile or hazardous chemicals
● Cannot bring food or drinks into the makerspace (with exception of a closed container
of water)
● Make sure hair is tied back and out of the way
● Do not wear baggy or loose clothes
FYELIC ONLINE
To support students with extenuating circumstances, FYELIC offers online help sessions via
Microsoft Teams. Use of this service, like the physical FYELIC, is based on availability and access
may be revoked if students are found in violation of the code of conduct.
POWERED EQUIPMENT
Access to the 3D printers, laser cutters, and machinery in FYELIC is limited to FYELIC staff,
faculty, and student workers. If you have a need for the powered equipment, you must ask for
assistance. Unsupervised use could create an unsafe environment for yourself and others.
Additionally, unsupervised use may result in disciplinary action.
FYELIC MACHINES
The makerspace machinery, laser cutters, and 3D printers are only available for course
projects. The 3D Printing Studio in the Snell Library as well as EXP have laser cutters and 3D
printers available for personal projects.
