1. Clemenceau’s motives and aims:
To ensure the future security of France and Germany had attacked France twice in previous 50
years. He wanted to punish Germany severely leaving it weak. He also demanded the permanent
disarmament of Germany and very high levels of reparations to pay for the destruction caused by
Germany. He wanted Alsace-Lorraine to be returned to France and also demanded of Rhineland
becoming an independent state so that France no longer shared border with Germany. He also
required Saar basin to be transferred to France.
Lloyd George’s motives and aims:
He wanted “just and firm” peace which avoided Germany seeking revenge but satisfied British
people and also demanded a share of Germany’s colonies. He believed that the quick economic
revival of Europe and German economy would re-establish trade and also wanted to reduce the
threat of the spread of communism from Russia. Also he wanted to maintain strength and power of
British Navy to protect Britain colonies.
Wilson’s motives and aims
He wanted a fair and lasting peace to prevent Germany from seeking revenge .He believed in selfdetermination and hence wanted to strengthen the government of defeated nations. He thought
nations should be permitted to decide their own political future. He wanted international cooperation with countries working together to settle disputes peacefully in future .His 14th point, the
most important of which was setting up of the ‘League of nations’
