first objective of BAM Construct UK.
Manchester's One Angel Square is the
headquarters of the Co-operative Group.
Housing 3,000 employees, it has achieve the
highest ever new build BREEAM score of
95.16%, and awarded an "Outstanding" Building
Research
Establishment
Environmental
Assessment Methodology (BREEAM) rating.

Planning and Construction Details:

This 16-storey building contains 325,000 sq ft of open plan office space and a large
central atrium. Two basement floors include underground car parking, auditorium and fitness
facilities.

Construction work began in July 2010 soon after planning permission was granted. The
first task was installing the 539 pile foundations - each at an average depth of 18 meters. Work
soon began on assembling the 3,300 tones of steel and 1,948 coffered concrete floor slabs which
make up the structure of the building.
An estimated £17m of building materials out of the total £100m cost has been locally
sourced reducing embodied energy and minimizing environmental impact.

Roof Construction Details:
Constructed tilted towards the south with glass and lightweight steel as it main material,
and in the form of terraced structure, in order to maximize passive solar gain to heat the building,
and maximizing daylight from the atrium. Overheating are prevented by five stepped curved shades
above the atrium, which also lessen the glare.

The steel framed lattice roof (atrium) are constructed by using lightweight steel and glass,
and consist of five huge steel Vierendeel trusses that span throughout the atrium, and tied
together with a steel framed lattice.
Each of them is framed by a pair of 300mm diameter circular hollow sections, that will
meet at the ends of the lattice. The roof atrium glass also has a 60% of solid frit pattern, in order to
control direct sunlight and preserving the views out from the inside of the building.

Environmental
Features:
This building is one of
the most sustainable large
buildings in Europe, with BREEAM
"Outstanding" rating. It uses earth
tube that "feeds" the building
with fresh air for ventilation as
sustainable alternative for cooling
and heating.
Open atrium and double
skinned façade, major features in
creating natural heating, cooling
and lighting in this building
demonstrate how to construct
passive design in building.
This building combined
used water and rain water
recycling systems, which use
harvested rainwater as the main
source, as extreme heat makes
water as a vital and limited
source.

Each of the coffer will have
chilled beams, lighting, sprinklers and
passive infrared sensors.
Chilled beams that are
attached to the coffered ceiling units will
only start to operate when the concrete is
warm enough.

Biodiversity:
The site was contaminated with
Japanese knotweed, an invasive species.
Working with a specialist subcontractor we
ensured the building footprint was completely
free of any rhizomes, ensuring the spread of
Japanese knotweed was minimized. Roof top
planters and Public Realm planting have been
used to help enhance the local biodiversity.

Health and Wellbeing:
Health and safety was a priority
throughout the project and our high standards
were acknowledged through industry honors
such as the British Safety Council’s (Merit) award
at the 2012 International Safety Awards, and
three gold awards through the Considerate
Constructor’s Scheme.
