The Distributive Property
Making Math Real, Visual, and Fun
1. Real-Life Connection
• Imagine buying 3 gift bags.
• Each bag has 1 chocolate and 1 juice box.
• Instead of adding bag by bag:
• 3 × (chocolate + juice) = 3 × chocolate + 3 ×
juice.
2. Visual Representation (Area
Model)
• Draw a rectangle:
• - One side: (x + 4)
• - Other side: 3
• Break into two rectangles:
• 3 × x and 3 × 4 → Total area = 3x + 12
3. With Numbers
• Example: 2 × (5 + 7)
• Add first: 2 × 12 = 24
• Distribute: 2 × 5 + 2 × 7 = 10 + 14 = 24
• Both ways give the same result!
4. Algebraic Examples
• 4(x + 6) = 4x + 24
• -2(y – 5) = -2y + 10
• Common mistakes:
• • Forgetting to multiply every term
• • Dropping negatives
• • Thinking it only works with numbers
5. Closure Activity
• Quick practice:
• 5(2 + ___) = 10 + 15
• Or Sorting Game:
• Match 3(x+2) with 3x+6
