It is the basis of your education and gives your future credential value. Northern Lights College recognizes three separate forms of academic dishonesty: plagiarism, cheating, and fraud. All three forms of dishonesty are serious academic offences that are grounds for failure of a course or even expulsion from Northern Lights College. To avoid issues with academic integrity, always do your own work and accurately report the sources for the information you are using. Taking shortcuts may lead to cheating. This includes reusing your own previous assignments (self-plagiarism). If you are unsure what materials or tools are allowed in completing an assessment, ask your instructor in a timely fashion. Plagiarism Students often struggle with the formalities around proper documentation and use of sources, and thus commit plagiarism. To prevent plagiarism, you must give others due credit whenever you use their ideas or works, including when the source is an artificial intelligence tool. You also need to express your ideas in your own words and use quotation marks to show if you are borrowing someone else’s wording. Please refer to the NLC Library Citation Style Guide for citation resources which will help you complete your NLC class assignments and projects. Also, to avoid plagiarism and give credit where it is due, please read the NLC’s Plagiarism Guide carefully and pay particular attention to the Northern Lights College Academic Integrity policy. Turnitin and D2L Essays and other assignments must be submitted through the D2L Dropbox, which may screen the text using Turnitin. Turnitin can detect text-matching and the use of artificial intelligence writing tools.
