Introduction
Main Arguments
(List your THREE (3) arguments that you will discuss throughout your essay)
Hook/Introductory Statement:
In our current society, proper, high-speed Internet has become
less of a privilege and more of an essential requirement.
●
●
Thesis Statement:
It would be highly beneficial for the government to provide
citizens with high-speed internet as a necessity.
●
Internet access would also provide safety benefits by
keeping all citizens updated through announcements
and news sources.
It will allow people to work from home and will open up
more job opportunities and a platform for small
businesses.
Some could argue that high-speed internet is harmful for
students because it grants them opportunities to cheat,
but it will provide more educational resources, and allow
everyone equal access to educational online platforms.
Argument 1
Evidence (methods of proof)
(Provide argument and points to support the thesis and argument)
(list the relevant facts, quotes, stats, etc to support your points)
Topic Sentence: High-speed internet for all citizens helps
alleviate many public safety-related concerns.
“accessing operational data on-line; visualizing events via
photos and maps; providing backup communications in lieu of
broadcast media; exchanging information between crisis
managers and responders; and providing information to media
and the public.” (Newsom)
Point 1: The Internet provides a platform for public safety
announcements and updates in live time during potential
disasters. Making sure all citizens have adequate internet
access will ensure that everyone will have access to this
information.
Point 2: Stable internet will also help with efficient
communication when it comes to emergencies and emergency
services, allowing for faster response times and coordination.
“its use in the Kobe earthquake in Japan in 1995, ice storms in
the United States and Canada in 1998,” (Newsom)
“An essential part of that planning includes the deployment and
effective use of the best means of communications that we may
have at our disposal,” (Farnham)
“The modern ability to chat casually or to be entertained by
communication technology is but an offshoot of the development
of that technology which first permitted priority communication
about more urgent matters.” (Farnham)
Argument 2
Evidence (methods of proof)
(Provide argument and points to support the thesis and argument)
(list the relevant facts, quotes, stats, etc to support your points)
Topic Sentence: Reliable internet can provide economic benefits “enhancement of the efficiency of exchanges could be in the
and growth, as well as create new opportunities.
domain of information (e.g., sales materials, manuals), customer
support (e.g., frequently asked questions), and transactions.”

(Sharma)
efficiently, providing many advantages including opening up job
“This favourable trend could become allied with businesses
opportunities for tech and remote work.
experiencing no changes in productivity, and reckoning dramatic
costs savings from reduced office space, commuting downtime,
Point 2: Access to steady internet will also grant citizens a
more flexible hours and working.” (Willcocks 4)
platform for small businesses, and will aid with growth of local
economies.
“The economics of remote and home working will be
the
clincher for all businesses, and assuming the technology will be
readily available,” (Willcocks 1)
“All sites on the Internet are equal, and the small businesses
can launch complex sales programs and implement effective
globalization strategies on the Internet just like the bigger
companies.” (Hsieh and Lin)
Argument 3 (Counter-argument paragraph)
Evidence (methods of proof)
(Provide argument and points to support the thesis and argument)
(list the relevant facts, quotes, stats, etc to support your points)
Topic Sentence: (present the counter-argument) High-speed
internet access to all can negatively impact the education
system.
“the Internet has some functions, especially in education, and
these can be listed as (i) storehouse of information, (ii)
communication without boundaries, (iii) online interactive
learning, (iv) electronic/online research, (v) innovation in the
new world, (vi) improve interest in learning, (vii) global
education, and (viii) information catalogues (Park, 2009).”
Point 1 (relates to the counter-argument): Stable internet access
for all can encourage procrastination and academic dishonesty
among students.
(Dogruer)
Point 2 (this is your refutation): The benefits outweigh the
drawbacks as the Internet grants access to many educational
sources and platforms such as Google Classroom/Drive,
Brightspace, and an endless library of resources. Also, the
Internet now provides resources that can detect things like
plagiarism and academic dishonesty such as Turnitin, and
students themselves are responsible for exercising their selfregulation and productivity. All students deserve the right to
access these platforms efficiently and equally.
“the Internet provides not only social connection and
entertainment, but also academic and scientific information as
well. Thus, it is vitally important to encourage students to use
this invaluable source to get any kind of information they need in
their academic studies because the development of the Internet
would be meaningless if it is not used appropriately in
education” (Dogruer)
“In Europe, 86% of teachers state that pupils are more
motivated and attentive when computers and the Internet are
used in class (Korte & Hüsing, 2006).” (Stošić)
