Intro
It was around 2016 and I was in the final year of elementary school. This time period will
always be a period I look back on with regret. Why you may ask? Well in my opinion it was the
start of an extremely toxic relationship when it came to formulating any type of professional
academic paper. On one specific evening it was parent teacher night at my school. I was a shy
kid so I didn’t say much as my mother and teacher sat at the desk across from me discussing
my behavior in class. At first nothing really stood out to me, until my teacher began singing my
praises about how impressive it is that I’m able to do my writing in a timely manner and still
converse with my friends at the time. At the time that one little compliment made my ego soar.
Little did I know that the overconfidence would be my downfall. Not even a week later I wouldn’t
spend any time revising or even begin writing my essay about starting my own ice cream
business. However, my teacher favored me so much that she allowed me to submit the paper
late. So I stayed up super late with my pen glued to my paper while I quickly wrote the entire
thing in one night. The next morning when I went to class and handed it in to eventually get an
A, I had thought to myself that the added stress had helped me write better. So I continued
doing it because I thought that is how I do my best work. Every time the writing assignment had
a month-long period to do it for a week, I would always wait until the very night before. For the
most part it was working. In most of my English classes in middle school and high school,
standardized testing was more prevalent. Making it so I could get a terrible grade on an essay
but still end with a B at the end of the year. However there is a considerable change when it
comes to K-12 education versus college and I would learn this lesson the hard way. In fall 2024
I had a full breakdown about one of my English assignments that I wasn’t able to complete due
to me attempting to do the whole thing about 4 days after the initial due date. (Insert more
details about essay and that night)
I ended up withdrawing from the class, losing all the time I had invested in it. This really
humbled me and put into perspective how much my poor writing practices had not only
negatively affected my grades but my relationship with writing. After that moment I wish I had
approached all of my previous writing assignments with more discipline and better time
management, because then I feel my relationship literary capabilities would be stronger.
