Product Placement: Wayne’s World
Wayne’s World is an American comedy film that was released in 1992. It has a 79% on
Rotten Tomatoes and was rated 7/10 on IMDb. It was directed by Penelope Spheeris and
produced by Lorne Michaels. Wayne’s World is a fun, goofy, and heartfelt movie about Wayne
Campbell, a man who hosts his own TV show known as, "Wayne's World,” in his parent’s
basement. His best friend, Garth Algar, is also in the show as Wayne’s co-host. Their show ends
up being seen by a TV Producer, Benjamin Kane, who tries to monopolize and control Wayne’s
World. Wayne also meets a singer/bassist named Cassandra Wong at a bar. He witnesses her
performing on stage and falls in love instantly, all while his obsessed ex-girlfriend, Stacy,
continuously tries to win him back throughout the movie. Wayne’s World is a very simplistic yet
complex movie about quirky characters coming together against a villainous TV Producer. It’s
dramatic, funny, and perfectly wacky.
During the movie, Benjamin Kane commercializes Wayne and Garth’s show, setting up a
studio for them to host Wayne’s World. Wayne is tasked with interviewing their sponsor, who he
ends up humiliating on live television. In this specific scene, Benjamin can be seen informing
Wayne about why they need their sponsor. He also reminds Wayne that he’d signed a contract,
and so, he must oblige. Wayne makes it a point that he does not want to be a sellout to which
Garth agrees, and this is where the product placement begins.
The product placement in Wayne’s World is extremely obvious. It’s meant to be very
noticeable in a comedic way. “Contract or no, I will not bow to any sponsor.” Wayne says as he
opens a Pizza Hut box while looking directly at the camera. He pulls out a pizza and then smiles
as if he’s posing for an advertisement. The camera looks down to a Doritos bag in Wayne’s hand
before panning upwards to his face. Wayne then continues to talk about how he doesn’t wish to
be a sellout. Afterwards, he reaches into the bag and takes a bite of a Dorito, smiling at the
camera while nodding in enjoyment. He then asks Garth for his opinion, who is dressed from
head to toe in Reebok merchandise. Garth is actively wearing a Reebok baseball cap over a
Reebok beanie, adding more to the comedic effect of the scene. “It’s like people only do things
because they get paid,” Garth pauses for a moment to adjust his position. “And that’s just really
sad.” Not even a moment later, Wayne goes, “I can’t talk about it anymore, it’s giving me a
headache.” Garth then goes, in regular clothes this time, “Here, take two of these.” While
looking at the camera with Nuprin in his hand. The camera pans to the Nuprin in Wayne’s hand
as Wayne says, “Ah, Nuprin! Little, yellow, different.” After a line from Benjamin, we see a
close up shot of Wayne’s face as he holds up a Pepsi. He then takes a sip before smiling at the
camera.
The product placement in Wayne’s World is extremely obvious. Each advertisement is
right in your face. There’s nothing subtle about it. The product placement fit inside the movie so
well, adding more to its quirky and whimsical charm.
