SOCIAL IDENTITY GROUPS
Social Identity groups are based on the physical and social characteristics of individuals. They
are sometimes clear, sometimes unclear, often self-claimed and frequently ascribed by others.
Racial groupings are often ascribed as well as self-claimed. Government, schools, and employers
often ask an individual to claim a racial identity group or simply ascribe one to an individual.
Other social identities are personally claimed, but not often publicly announced or easily
ascribed, such as sexual orientation or religion.
For the purpose of this self-examination, please identify the memberships you claim and those
others ascribe to you. (This will not be shared)
Race: (Asian. African-American, Hispanic, Native American. Caucasian, etc.)
Ethnicity: (Italian, Puerto Rican, Navajo Diné, Jewish, Korean, etc.)
Gender: (Man, Woman, Transgender. etc.)
Sexual Orientation: (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Heterosexual, etc.)
Class: (Poor, Working, Middle, Upper Middle, Upper, etc.)
Physical Ability: (Disabled, Abled, Superhero)
Religion: (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Agnosticism, Atheism, etc.)
Age: (Young, Middle, Old)
