SYNOPSIS
My book is uniquely different from any other book covering the same topic. Existing books on medical
interpretation focus only on the roles and responsibilities of interpreters, and mentioning the techniques used
for effective interpretation. Still other medical interpretation books have poor coverage of bilingual medical
terminology, not including common dialect differences; leading to medical interpreters having to do their
own research, which leads to higher rates of mistakes or misunderstandings occurring. This is unacceptable
in any field, let alone in a medical interpretation, where a patient’s health and well-being are at stake.
My book encompasses both components of this skillset, incorporating the rules and regulations as well
as an introduction to human anatomy and medical terminology in both languages.
It includes:
 Bilingual terminology for every term used in medical interpretation
 50+ medical terminologies of symptoms for each specialty
 60+ medical terminologies of diseases for each specialty
 20+ medical terminologies of investigations/tests for each specialty
 30+ medical terminologies of surgical interventions for each specialty
 More than 40 pages of the Latin prefixes and suffixes used to construct all medical terminology,
including their interpretation into English and Arabic and example for each.
 An interactive part! Have fun solving puzzles and crosswords that help the novice interpreter
memorize all the terminology.
 Real life scenarios for the absolute novice to practice interpreting
The chapters of my book are divided into different medical sciences found in a hospital setting and
some will be sub-divided even further for ease of use. For example: Orthopedics chapter is subdivided into
Upper and Lower limbs and further sub-divided into individual joints. They include bilingual terminology
for the anatomy, symptoms, investigations, diseases and disorders, as well as treatments, both conservative
and surgical.
Although this is book is comprehensive, it does not cover ALL hospital departments and I intend to
continue in a second book.
Accuracy-wise the Medical terminology part has been reviewed by specialist doctor from worldwide
for each specialty. Who speaks English and other native languages 13 languages (English, Arabic, Danish,
French, German, Hindi, Korean, Malayalam, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu)

compliant with over 17 years of experience. Currently working in the United Arab Emirates as an onsite
medical interpreter, and also provide remote interpreting OPI and VRI for clients in the U.S., U.K. and

‫ميزنا الخالق سبحانه وتعالى نحن البشر بلغات وألسنة مختلفة التي نستخدمها للتعبير عن احتياجتنا وللتواصل مع اآلخرين‪ .‬والتعبير عن‬
‫مشاعرنا المتضاربة من حزن‪ ،‬فرح‪ ،‬آالم‪ .‬اللغة ليست مجرد كلمات بل هي أشمل وأعمق‪ ،‬حيث تعبر اللغة عن ثقافات وحضارات وقيم‬
‫وأخالق شعوب وقبائل‪ .‬وحتى نتمكن من استيعاب وفهم لغة بعينها نحتاج لدراسة وفهم كل ما يدور حول األنسان المتحدث لهذه اللغة من خلفية‬
‫ثقافية‪ ،‬دين‪ ،‬تاريخ وموروثات مجتمعية‪ ،‬عادات وتقاليد‪ .‬وكيفية تعبيره عن مشاعره بالكلمات والعبارات المختلفة وطريقة تعبير لغة الجسد‬
‫ونبرة الصوت في هذه اللغة‪ ،‬مثاال حيث بعض المجتمعات تعتبر نبرة الصوت المرتفعة تعبيرا عن الحماس والفرح‪ ،‬وشعوب أخرى تعبر عن‬

‫لذا اعتبر وظيفة الترجمة مهنة سامية‪ ،‬لتقريب الناس ومساعدتهم على فهم واستيعاب االختالفات البينية في شكل حضاري‪ .‬فنحن كمترجمين‬
‫لسنا قواميس متنقلة أو انسان آلي للترجمة‪ ،‬لكن الدور المنوط هو ترجمة أفكار‪ ،‬كلمات‪ ،‬مشاعر‪ ،‬لغة جسد‪ ،‬نبرة صوت‪ ،‬حياة انسان كاملة‪.‬‬
‫لمساعدة الناس على فهم بعض بشكل أفضل‪.‬‬
‫لذا فكرت في فكرة الكتاب عن الترجمة الشفوية في مجال الرعاية الصحية‪ ،‬حيث يختلف عن باقي الكتب في هذا السياق حيث هنا جمعت كل‬
‫ما يحتاجه المترجم بشكل شامل‪ ،‬عن طريق طرح الكتاب في ثالثة أقسام مهمة لكل مترجم طبي عربي – اتجليزي معاصر‬
‫القسم األول‪:‬‬
‫يقوم بطرح وسرد تاريخ الترجمة الشفوية‪ ،‬والفرق بين الترجمة التحريرية والشفوية‪ ،‬األدوار األربعة للمترجم الشفوي الذي من خاللها يستطيع‬
‫أن يترجم بشكل احترافي ومتى يتنقل بين األربعة أدوار باحترافية على حسب الموقف‪ ،‬قواعد الترجمة الطبية التي يجب علينا االلتزام بها‬
‫‪)The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act( ، HIPAA Complaint‬‬
‫(قاعدة حفظ الخصوصيات التابعة لقانون إخضاع التأمين الصحي لقابلية النقل والمحاسـبة)‬
‫والتعرف على أنواع الترجمة الشفوية المختلفة‪ ،‬أخالقيات الترجمة الطبية‬
‫القسم الثاني‪:‬‬
‫يتضمن ترجمة كل البادءات والالحقات الطبية)‪ (prefixes and suffixes‬بشكل مبسط مع أمثلتها في شكل مصطلحات طبية‪ ،‬وأيضا يتضمن‬
‫‪ 51‬تخصص من مجاالت الطب وسرد المصطلحات باللغتين العربية واألنجليزية‪ ،‬من عرض الجزء التشريحي لهذا التخصص‪ ،‬أعراض‬
‫المرض‪ ،‬األمراض‪ ،‬الفحوصات المطلوبة‪ ،‬العالجات المتوفرة‪ ،‬اإلجراءات الطبية‪/‬العمليات الجراحية‪ ،‬المضاعفات في حالة عدم البدء في‬
‫العالج أو في فترة التشافي بعد الجراحة أو أثناء العمليات لكل تخصص على حدا على سبيل المثال ال الحصر تخصص طب األسرة‪ ،‬العظام‪،‬‬
‫العمود الفقري‪.....،‬‬
‫القسم الثالث‪:‬‬
‫يتضمن جزء تفاعلي من سيناريوهات حقيقية بين المريض والطبيب في عيادات مختلفة مع الترجمة من وإلى اللغتين العربية واالنجليزية‪ ،‬ومن‬
‫ثم ترك مجال لبعض السيناريوهات بدون ترجمة للتدريب عليها‪،‬‬
‫وأيضا يتضمن الجزء الثالث أسئلة وفوازير وكلمات متقاطعة عن المصطلحات الطبية واألمراض بشكل شيق وتفاعلي للتدريب‬
‫أتمنى أن يفي هذا الكتاب بالغرض المنوط منه لتلبية ومساعدة كل مترجم طبي عربي انجليزي في مجال عمله وتعزيز وفهم مدى أهمية الدور‬
‫الحيوي الذي يقوم به في مجال الرعاية الصحية‪ ،‬والـتأكيد على أن غياب المترجم في المنظومة الصحية يسبب خلل في التواصل بين المريض‬
‫ومقدمي الرعاية الصحية والذي يترتب عليه أخطاء جسيمة في التشخيصات الطبية والعالجات المترتبة على ذلك والتي تؤثر على صحة وحياة‬
‫المريض‪.‬‬

The History of Language Interpretation and translation
The birth of translation and interpretation is known to date back to earlier than 300 B.C. in Ancient
Egypt. There are no confirmed evidence of translation or interpretation activities prior to the Ancient
Egyptian dealings with the Dynasty of Nubia, Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. The first record of
interpreting activity were in the form of Egyptian low-relief sculptures found in a prince’s tomb, that made
reference to an interpreter supervisor. Therefore, scholars agree that the history of interpretation and
translation began in Egypt, since it is there that civilization, in its own sense was born and constructed: one
of the earliest forms of writing was born there, with which the history of civilized society began.

How did we understand the Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and its civilization?
For centuries, life in ancient Egypt was a mystery, until the discovery of “the Rosetta Stone ‫”حجر رشيد‬,
by a Frenchman named Bouchard in August 1799. In 1814, the Englishman Thomas Young, and later in
1821-22, the Frenchman Jean-François Champollion; interpreted and deciphered the languages engraved on
the stone: Hieroglyphics, Demotic and Ancient Greek - ‫ و الهيراطيقية‬،‫اللغة المصرية القديمة الهيروغليفية المصرية‬

The inscriptions, apparently composed by the
priests of Memphis, summarize benefactions conferred
by Ptolemy V Epiphanes (205–180 BCE) and were
written in the ninth year of his reign in
commemoration of his accession to the throne.
Interpreters continued to be employed throughout
the Middle Ages. Monks of many different
nationalities translated Biblical texts in monasteries;
