The December 1972 elections had produced the Labor Party (ALP) Government of Prime
Minister Gough Whitlam
Gough Whitlam became Prime Minister in 1972
Sir John Kerr was sworn in as Governor-General of Australia on 11 July 1974.
On 11 November 1975, Governor-General Sir John Kerr used his reserve powers to sack
Prime Minister Gough Whitlam
Senate blocked the budget (note casual vacancies were filled by Liberal members, which
meant Libs had a majority in the Senate)
- Senate opposition leader was Reg Withers
Kerr acted “dishonourably” and “deceptively” according to PM Gough Whitlam
