A
1. Complete the following chart using information you identified in the newspaper article
“Feet frozen, girl tries to save father.” If you can only answer three of these questions
you need to reread the article.
Who was involved? David Hunt (dad)
Leia (daughter)
The doctors
Leia’s mom
What happened? David Hunt and Leia went out snowmobiling to their cottage in Maniwaki, Northwest of
Montreal. The snowmobile’s skis got caught in the snow-covered grate of drainage
pipes and they both fell 5 feet down a steep ravine. Leia did not get hurt but David Hunt
had completely smashed his knee. Leia had made an attempt to get help from the
nearest town but she couldn’t and returned. When she returned she fell into shallow
water causing water to seep into her boots. Later, Leia had set out to the town again,
but her boots were solid ice. Mid-morning a family of 4 snowmobilers came across
David Hunt, picked him up, and headed in the direction of Leia. By the time they caught
up with her she was already within the reach of a store.
Where did it happen? It happened in Maniwaki Quebec, Canada.
When did it happen? It happened on March 11th, 2003.
Why did it happen? It happened because the snowmobile they were riding got caught in the snow-covered
grate of drainage pipes.
How did people feel about the outcome? In the end people were surprised that Leia was able to go through such agony and
torture.
2. a. How did highlighting the 5 Ws and H while you were reading help fill in the chart?
Highlighting the 5 Ws and H helped to fill in the chart because I didn't have to reread the
entire article all over again since the key information was already highlighted.
b. Set a goal for using this strategy again as you read a new selection in this unit
My goal is to only highlight necessary information that I will need while answering
questions about the new selection.
B
1. Why didn’t Leia tell her father that she had water in her boots?
I think that Leia didn’t tell her father that she had water in her boots because she didn’t
want him to worry and she probably thought that he wouldn't have let her walk almost
three kilometers to get help for him.
2. Why was Leia more successful the second time she went for help? (List two factors
that might have helped her the second time)
I think that Leia was more successful the second time because she was more
determined to get help since she knew that she didn’t have much time left till her dad
would’ve died. I think that another factor is that there weren’t wolves chasing after her,
unlike the first time.
3. Why does David call Leia “a big hero” even though he was saved by the family of
snowmobilers?
I think that David calls Leia “a big hero” even though he was saved by the family of
snowmobilers because Leia didn’t give up on trying to get help for him.
5. Reread the third paragraph of “Canadian man rescued woman from house fire.”
Based on this information, do you think Leia deserves a Carnegie medal? Support your
answer.
I think that Leia deserves a Carnegie medal because she risked her life to an
extraordinary degree to get help for her dad. A countless amount of dangerous things
could’ve happened to her but she still powered through to get help for someone else,
which is why I think that she deserves a Carnegie medal.
