English Movie Club Curriculum
September 1 – December 19 (16 weeks)
3–4 hours per week
Overall Goals:





Improve listening skills through authentic English dialogues in movies.
Expand thematic vocabulary related to everyday life, culture, and society.
Develop speaking fluency through discussions, debates, and role-plays.
Increase cultural awareness by exploring films from different genres and backgrounds.
Foster creativity through student-led projects and film-making.
Weekly Plan
September — Introduction & Classic Stories
Week 1 (Sept 1–7)





Theme: Welcome to Movie Club
Movie/Clips: Pixar Shorts (For the Birds, Piper, La Luna)
Activities:
o Ice-breaking games (Favorite Movies Survey, “Guess the Movie” game).
o Introduction to movie genres & film vocabulary.
o Group discussion: Why do we watch movies?
Vocabulary: genres (comedy, drama, action, fantasy), movie-related terms (actor,
director, plot, scene).
Skill Focus: Speaking fluency, group discussion.
Week 2 (Sept 8–14)





Theme: Family & Friendship
Movie: The Lion King (selected scenes)
Activities:
o Pre-watching: discuss “What makes a hero?”
o While-watching: guided questions on family, bravery, leadership.
o Post-watching: role-play “Advice to Simba” (students as characters).
Vocabulary: family (uncle, cousin, heir), emotions (brave, proud, jealous).
Skill Focus: Expressing opinions, describing emotions.
Week 3 (Sept 15–21)




Theme: School & Friendship
Movie: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (scenes)
Activities:
o Sorting Hat Role-play: students choose houses and explain reasons.
o Discussion: “What makes a good friend?”
o Writing: short paragraph about their own school life vs. Hogwarts.
Vocabulary: school subjects, magical objects, personality traits.

Skill Focus: Role-play, descriptive writing.
Week 4 (Sept 22–28)





Theme: Humor & Family
Movie: Home Alone (Part 1, selected scenes)
Activities:
o Pre-watching: brainstorm “Holiday traditions”
o Post-watching discussion: “Could you survive alone at home?”
o Group activity: create a list of “Kevin’s Survival Tips.”
Vocabulary: household objects, actions (set a trap, hide, scream), holiday vocabulary.
Skill Focus: Storytelling, making predictions.
October — Culture & Society
Week 5 (Sept 29 – Oct 5)





Theme: Dreams & Challenges
Movie: The Pursuit of Happyness (scenes)
Activities:
o Debate: “Which is more important: family or career?”
o Reflection writing: What’s my dream for the future?
Vocabulary: jobs, career, ambition, failure, success.
Skill Focus: Debate skills, expressing arguments.
Week 6 (Oct 6–12)

Theme: Feelings & Emotions
Movie: Inside Out (Pixar)
Activities:
o Students create a “new emotion” and present it.
o Group discussion: “How do emotions control our lives?”
Vocabulary: joy, sadness, anger, disgust, fear, memory, personality.
Skill Focus: Presentation skills, describing abstract concepts.
Week 7 (Oct 13–19)

Theme: Technology & Society
Movie: The Social Network (selected scenes)
Activities:
o Discussion: “How has social media changed our lives?”
o Debate: Social media: helpful or harmful?
Vocabulary: internet, website, start-up, friendship, betrayal.
Skill Focus: Formal debate practice.
Week 8 (Oct 20–26)

Theme: Halloween Special
Movie: The Nightmare Before Christmas OR Coraline
Activities:

Spooky storytelling (students invent a short scary story).

November — Global Issues & Inspiration
Week 9 (Oct 27 – Nov 2)

Theme: Environment & Climate Change
Movie: The Day After Tomorrow (scenes)
Activities:
o Group project: “Save the Earth” poster campaign.
o Discussion: “Can movies change people’s behavior?”
Vocabulary: climate, disaster, flood, storm, pollution, protect.
Skill Focus: Persuasive speaking, teamwork.
Week 10 (Nov 3–9)

Theme: Equality & Science
Movie: Hidden Figures
Activities:
o Group presentation: “Important women in science.”
o Debate: “Does everyone have equal opportunities today?”
Vocabulary: space, mathematics, equality, discrimination, NASA.
Skill Focus: Presentation, formal vocabulary.
Week 11 (Nov 10–16)

Theme: Life Lessons & History
Movie: Forrest Gump (selected scenes)
Activities:
o Timeline activity: connecting history with movie scenes.
o Reflection writing: “A life lesson from Forrest Gump.”
Vocabulary: destiny, war, freedom, kindness, perseverance.
Skill Focus: Writing reflections, summarizing.
Week 12 (Nov 17–23)

Theme: Traditions & Family
Movie: Coco (Disney-Pixar)
Activities:
o Students share family traditions from their culture.
o Singing activity (learn a song from the movie).

December — Creativity & Final Project

Theme: Heroes & Choices
Movie: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Activities:
o Students design their own superhero.
o Present “My Superhero Story.”
Vocabulary: hero, villain, power, responsibility, choice.

Week 14 (Dec 1–7)

Theme: Kindness & Cultural Exchange
Movie: Paddington
Activities:
o Discussion: “Is it easy to adapt to another culture?”
o Role-play: A foreigner visiting your city.
Vocabulary: travel, kindness, hospitality, food, tradition.
Skill Focus: Role-play, intercultural communication.
Week 15 (Dec 8–14)

Theme: Diversity & Tolerance
Movie: Zootopia
Activities:
o Discussion: “What stereotypes exist in our society?”
o Group activity: Write an alternative ending to the movie.
Vocabulary: tolerance, stereotype, prejudice, society, diversity.
Skill Focus: Critical thinking, discussion.
Week 16 (Dec 15–19) — Final Week




Theme: Student Film Festival
Activities:
o Students in groups create their own short film/skit (3–5 minutes) in English.
o Screening Day: watch all films.
o Award ceremony: Best Actor/Actress, Best Story, Best Teamwork.
Skill Focus: Collaboration, performance, public speaking.
Wrap-up (5–10 min): Reflection, mini-homework (write a short review, quote analysis,
or vocabulary practice).
