iii Overview This class is designed to provide an introduction to the DSP™ Common and is the first manual in the BackOffice DSP Enablement training course. The BackOffice Associates™ (BOA) Data Stewardship Platform (DSP ®) 7.0.1 contains functionality used to support the value that BOA consultants bring to our customers to deliver the core data quality, data transformation and information governance functionality required by business users. Use the process described in this manual as closely as your client will allow. This will ensure BOA projects are using a common approach, simplifying implementation for all consultants and maximizing the re-use of knowledge and processes going forward. Who Should Use This Manual? This manual is intended for the novice developer to become familiar with the BOA Data Migration Implementation. The course reviews the steps of data migration as they pertain to and should be implemented on a migration project. Objective This training is designed to provide the participant with a foundation and understanding of the steps and processes used to perform a successful data migration. The high-level steps involved in BOA’s migration methodology are as follows: BOA™ Data Stewardship Platform™ 7.0 Overview The exercises provide hands on interaction with the DSP 7.0 features along with explanations and details on their usage. Once mastered, these skills will be used in the BOA methodology process. This training includes the setup and activities for a data migration from a legacy source system to a new implementation of an ERP Target system using Microsoft SQL. Training Manual > DSP Enablement – Common/Collect > 7.0.1a > Page 3 of 17 Overview of the BackOffice Associates Data Migration Methodology BackOffice Associates® has developed a standard proven methodology for successfully completing data conversion projects – even those with large numbers of source (legacy) systems and very large volumes of data. Listed is a high-level summary of that methodology. It requires the use of Microsoft SQL Server® and DSP to take source data and make it business ready for loading into a target ERP system. The high-level steps involved in the BOA™ DSP methodology are: 1. Create Databases for all Source Systems. 2. Import all rows all columns of Source into Source Repository. 3. Create ERP Module databases in SQL. Source Methodology 4. Create Assemble Packages to Import Sources. 5. Register Source to Target in Design. 6. Analyze Source data in SQL, sorting data fields ascending and descending looking for inconsistencies. 7. Register and Execute Source reports in Transform. (dspMigrate) 8. Register and Execute the Insert Rule view in Transform. (dspMigrate) 9. Remove Source Data from Target with a Delete Rule created as a SQL view. 10. Register and Execute the Delete Rule in Transform. (dspMigrate) 11. Process entire Source as a repeatable process. Target Methodology 12. Analyze the Target data in Transform by sorting data fields ascending and descending, looking for inconsistencies. 13. Create Target Validation reports using a SQL view, for both informational and data inconsistencies. 14. Register and Execute the Target reports in Transform. 15. Create Target Rules to cleanse data. Prior to an ERP Migration, Data should be: Business Ready Business Relevant System Ready 16. Register the Update rules and execute them in Transform. 17. Process entire Target as repeatable process. BOA™ DSP Training Overview The DSP Training begins with separate Skills Sessions that encompass the individual skills used to create the objects necessary to a data migration. These skills are broken down into the following: • • • Define Target SQL Insert Rule Views SQL Delete Rule Views Copyright © 2019 BackOffice Associates, LLC and/or its affiliates. Also, an understanding of how to use the AutoGen feature within the DSP and review of what happens when using this feature. Process Session: Using Common to setup Databases and Data Imports The instructor will demonstrate the entire methodology in an interactive session by adding a new source system, the sdbSouthwindXX, and importing data from the Country, Product, Region, Shipper and Supplier tables. • • • • • Creating connection to legacy source for data retrieval Registering the Target Database Adding tables to be imported from the source Refreshing the tables manually Creating custom schedules NOTE: Source table refers to the table where the data is coming from, and target refers to the table where data is going. Create connections and register sources in Common Review Legacy Source Connection Create the DSP™ Data Source for the specific external database which will be used by all trainees for the remaining exercises. NOTE: XX are the last two digits of the Training ID number given to each participant at the beginning of class and should be used to replace XX references in the document. (Ex. Collect maintains a unified collection of data from multiple, disparate systems without requiring users to connect to the actual systems. It can be configured to extract the data at scheduled intervals and at an individual table level. In this way, the data can be kept in sync based on the processing schedule of each data source. Collect also contains import groups to organize and manage sets of tables. Copyright © 2019 BackOffice Associates, LLC and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Refresh Manually Refreshing targets, sources and tables manually is often a necessary task; however, it can be detrimental to a server if a target is refreshed with a large amount of sources, or a large amount of data. Therefore, it is always best practice on a project to verify with a system administrator before manually refreshing any data. Refreshing table can occur at the individual level or at the target level. Refresh from Target Level Refreshing at the Target Level will extract a copy of data from all registered sources and load into target. To refresh target manually: 1. Verify sdbSouthwindXX target is selected in Parent Pane. 2. Click Refresh icon on Parent Pane Page Toolbar. 3. Refresh of all active sources/tables message displays, click OK. 4. Successful refresh displays Procedures Completed status icon. NOTE: Every source and every table attached to those sources have been refreshed. Refresh Individual Tables Refresh an individual sdbSouthwindXX table. When refreshing an individual table, it is refreshed immediately. To refresh a table manually: 1. Click Tables icon for the Southwind source in Dependent Pane. 2. Locate Product table. 3. Click Refresh icon on Page Toolbar. Refresh Table 4. Once Processing is complete, the Procedures Completed status icon displays. NOTE: You can quickly determine the last processing date and time by viewing the Completed field for any table. Training Manual > DSP Enablement – Common/Collect > 7.0.1a > Page 14 of 17 Self-Directed Exercise The following self-directed exercise is to ensure the main tasks in Common and Collect are understood. The exercise reaffirms the following concepts: • • • Add Tables using Collect Refreshing Data Creating and Modifying Schedules Scenario The client just informed you that she has identified 2 new tables in Southwind that contain legacy data that needs to be part of the migration process. The tables identified are EmployeeTerritory and EmployeeTitle. She informs you that the data changes frequently and that she would like the tables to contain the previous week’s data loaded by Monday morning of each week. If you could refresh the data every Sunday around 8:00 pm (enter time based on 24hr clock), that would ensure any weekend work is included in the data refresh. Add Rules in Collect Rules are registered to a Target Source to change or customize the Target Source tables. Create new rules using the following naming convention: [Database].[dbo].[RulePrefix][TableName]_[FieldName]_[Description][Action]. Register the rule after data has been downloaded by the package. NOTE: Collect rules require database and a schema owner prefix for the rule to process correctly. Add an Action for a Table Pre-Test To view the leading zeros: 1. Click Collect on Navigation Pane. 2. Locate and select sdbSouthwindXX. 3. Click Tables icon for Southwind source in Dependent Pane. 4. Locate and select Product table. 5. Click View Data icon. NOTE: The ProductID column data has leading zeros. In order to match other records on this key field the leading zeros must be removed. Implement 1. Click Browser Back button. 2. 3. 4. 5. Click Rules icon for Product table. Click Add button. Enter 10 in Priority field. Enter DSPCommon.dbo.apiActionRemoveLeadingZeroesUpd in Rule field. Advance build is used to store View Builds and to join in Transform Param settings for runtime settings instead of using a hard-coded value in a Where Clause. The Advance Build feature is primarily used for Data Migration Teams that require a parameter table built into the process and to retain views built. To view a group: 1. Click DSP Site Link. 2.
