The axolotl is a fascinating aquatic salamander
native to lakes around Mexico City. Unlike most
amphibians, axolotls retain their larval features
throughout their lives—a phenomenon called
neoteny—meaning they keep their gills and live
underwater instead of undergoing full
metamorphosis. They have the remarkable
ability to regenerate lost limbs, spinal cord, and
even parts of their brain, making them a subject
of intense scientific study. Axolotls have wide
heads, lidless eyes, and feathery external gills
that fan out from the sides of their heads, giving
them a unique and almost otherworldly
appearance. They are carnivorous, feeding on
small aquatic creatures like worms, insects, and
fish.
